Grade 1 Term 1 LP 2 Robotics
Grade 1 Term 1 LP 2 Robotics
1. Give specific instructions to a robot to cause it to produce an action based on the instruction
2. Observe demonstrably 21st C competencies in learner interaction.
3. Generate fun and enjoyment in their learning
Materials: Baskets (or cardboard boxes), toys to be picked up, arrows directions code cards, coloured A4 paper (red,
amber and green), a simple maze on paper, old remote controls.

groups.
Key Question: What makes robot to move?
Main Lesson:
Show & Tell:
Show pictures of a diversity of robots, and/or show the previous YouTube video on what robots do.
Explain:
That robots follow instructions (code) given to it. The code is part of the input whilst what the robot does, as a result
of the code, is the output. Robots cannot do what the instructions given to them say it should do.
Lead to activity:
Activity 1: Make a robot produce actions based on the instructions (code) you give to it
1. Draw a 4 by 4 (or bigger if space allows) maze on the floor of the class or outside (before the lesson to save
time).
2. Explain the instructions of the game to the learners:
Coding and Robotics Foundation Phase Lesson Plans
a. The object of the game is for learners to move their robot from the START to the END position on the
grid.
b. They select one member to be the ‘robot’ and another(s) to be the instructor who gives instructions to
the robot to move along the maze. The ‘robot’ should wear the robot mask they had made during week
3 when in the maze.
c. Each group is given the following code cards - 1 x colour set, 2 x direction set and 1 x action set - (13
code cards in total).
d. The instructors go into the grid and place their code cards for their ‘robot’ to follow.
e. Two groups may start at opposite points, at the start blocks. Two groups can start on the grid one after
the other, as long as the robot is able to listen and follow the instructions from its own instructor.
f. Once a groups has finished, another group can start. Decide on the order the groups should go,
otherwise things may get chaotic when the fun and the noise increases.
g. Each group should decide which and how many code cards they use, as long as they use cards from
all three categories.
h. Have a routine to freeze the game if necessary – to explain something or to restore order. You could
use words such as ‘Freeze’ or ‘Stop’, etc.
i. Make it fun and ensure that all learners participate. You could do this by having the group decide on

Conclusion / Reflection
d. What are you going to tell your family or friends about building a robot?
(Ensure that you give as many learners an opportunity to give an answer. If no one lifts their hand to answer, use
cold calling, without putting them on the spot too much. Handle their answers with care because they contain their
thoughts and emotions.)
3. Thank the learners for their participation.
4. Expanded Opportunity: Encourage learners to play robots with their friends and family at home..
