1
Carefully read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.
Joubert Logistics was founded by two brothers, Dirk and Jonathan Joubert, in Johannesburg in
1990. Little did they know at the time that they would revolutionise the logistics world. Soon
after its formation, Joubert Logistics enjoyed rapid growth around the country. Since then, the
company has been shaping, revolutionising, and simplifying the world of logistics. Today
Joubert Logistics is one of South Africa’s leading logistics companies and its services range
from delivering a letter to a loved one to parcel and document shipping and the distribution of
oversized and heavy cargo. The company’s culture and workplaces are built on equal
opportunities, recognition, and respect.
Recently, top management announced the decision to expand its services to other countries in
Africa such as Zimbabwe and Tanzania. As a result, three new sales managers, Sarah Brown,
George Dlamini, and Christopher Fourie, were appointed at the company. Sarah involves
herself fully in new experiences, George uses theories to make decisions and solve problems,
and Christopher likes to record, analyse, and question information. It is company policy that
new managers at Joubert Logistics be trained before they assume their respective roles.
Training enhances the skills and knowledge of employees and ultimately provides the
organisation with the competitive advantage required to succeed in this industry. It was
determined that the three new sales managers should be trained in communication skills.
Nisha Botha, a training and development practitioner at Joubert Logistics, has been tasked with
designing the communication skills training programme. She has begun thinking about how to
design and present the training programme. Specifically, Nisha believes that the material
should be learnt by describing a real-life situation relating to communication skills, where
managers are required to read, analyse, and discuss the situation at hand. Nisha is an expert
in communication skills and intends on facilitating the training programme. She also intends on
first presenting the training material that is totally new to the managers then gradually
proceeding to the material that is familiar to them. She is optimistic that the communication
skills training programme will be a success.
