The lesson plan focuses on teaching fifth-grade students about photosynthesis, including its process, importance, and the role of plants in the ecosystem. Students will engage in various activities such as discussions, outdoor observations, and group presentations to reinforce their understanding. Evaluation will be conducted through multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blank exercises, with an assignment to create a comic strip illustrating photosynthesis.

Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in

Science V

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Describe the process of photosynthesis;
2. Understand the importance of photosynthesis to life on Earth; and
3. Appreciate the role of plants in the ecosystem.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Photosynthesis
References: Science Textbook (Pages 78-82), various online resources
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Visual aids, and Tarpapel
Values Integration: Respect for nature, Responsibility in taking care of the environment

III. PROCEDURE

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance
3. Drill
4. Review
5. Motivation: Ask students about their understanding of how plants get their food

B. Lesson Proper

Plants make their food using sunlight, water, carbon dioxide and nutrients and
minerals from the soil. This process is called photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon
dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar.

Photosynthesis, the process by which green plants and certain other organisms
transform light energy into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in green
plants, light energy is captured and used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and
energy-rich organic compounds.
After the process is complete, photosynthesis releases oxygen and produces carbohydrate molecules,
most commonly glucose. These sugar molecules contain the energy that living things need to survive.

The process is called photosynthesis because plants use light, or photo, from the sun to make, or
synthesize, their chemical food energy. As you already know, photosynthesis is the term for the process
that plants use to make their food energy. They do this by converting sunlight into chemical energy.

Photosynthesis requires sunlight, chlorophyll, water, and carbon dioxide gas. Chlorophyll is a
substance in all green plants, especially in the leaves. Plants take in water from the soil and carbon
dioxide from the air. Photosynthesis starts when chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight.
 The importance of photosynthesis:
1. The rate of photosynthesis influence the productivity of agricultural crops.
2. It ensures that all living species have access to oxygen in the atmosphere.
3. It keeps the ecosystem's oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in check.
4. Plants are the source of fossil fuels.
5. Energy is locked in fuel as a result of photosynthesis in the sun.

 The role of plants in the ecosystem

Plants form the critical base of food chains in nearly all ecosystems. Through photosynthesis, plants
harvest the energy of the sun, providing both food and habitat for other organisms.
For example, plants are fed upon by insects, which may be eaten by birds, which are in turn are eaten by
birds of prey, and so on.

C. Enrichment Activities
Outdoor Activity: Stop, Observe, and Listen!
The teacher will take students outside to observe plants and discuss photosynthesis in a real-world
context. After discussing, the students will have their individual activity.

Direction: Write an essay on how you can apply your understanding of photosynthesis in everyday life.
The essay should consist of 3-5 sentences.

D. Generalization
1. What is your understanding in the process of photosynthesis?
- Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce
oxygen and energy as sugar. (The answer may vary)

2. Why do we say this process is photosynthesis?

- Photosynthesis refers to the process by which plants use light or photo from the sun to produce
chemical food energy. (The answer may vary)

3. How did you say that the plant is important in our ecosystem?
- Plants are the foundation of food chains in almost all ecosystems. (The answer may vary)

4. Give some importance of photosynthesis in our life.

- It maintains the ecosystem's oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. (The answer may vary)

5. Could you summarize what you have learned about photosynthesis?

E. Application
Direction: The class will be divided into 3 groups, each group will create a flowchart of the
photosynthesis process using chart paper and markers. After making their flowchart, they will present it
in front of the class to describe the process and the importance of photosynthesis.

The teacher has prepared rubrics for scoring this performance.

IV. EVALUATION
A. Multiple choice
Direction: Choose the correct letter of the answer and write it on your paper.
1. What do you call in the process where plants make their food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide?
a. Preserving c. Fertilization
b. Photosynthesis d. Observing

2. Where do the plants harvest energy to make its own food?

a. Moon c. Animals
b. Human d. Sun
3. It is a substance in all green plants, especially in the leaves.
a. Chlorophyll c. Water
b. Glucose d. Light

4. These are the necessary to do Photosynthesis, except

a. Carbon dioxide c. Energy
b. Water d. Sunlight

5. Why is the process by which a plant produces its own food called to as photosynthesis?
a. Because plants use water and air to make food.
b. Because plants use light, or photo, from the sun to make food.
c. Because plants use chemicals to make food.
d. Because plants needs fertilizers to make food.

B. Fill in the blanks

Direction: Look at the picture and fill in the blanks using the words at the box. ( 2 points each)

water sugar carbon dioxide

light oxygen

Photosynthesis is a process where plants use 1. ____________ from the sun convert 2. ___________ from
the air and 3. _______________ from the soil into 4. _______________ to feed and 5. _______________ is given out in
the air.

Answer key:
A. B.
1. B 1. light
2. D 2. carbon dioxide
3. A 3. water
