PREPARED BY:
EMMA LYN W. SORIANO
REVIEW::
Consider a population
consisting of 1,2,3, and 4.
suppose samples of size 2 are
drawn from the population. Find
the mean and variance of the
population.
SOLUTION:
1. Compute the mean of
the population 𝝁 .
σ𝒙 𝟏+𝟐+𝟑+𝟒
𝝁= = = 2.50
𝑵 𝟒

The mean is 2.50.

SOLUTION:
2. Compute the variance of
𝟐
the population (𝝈 ).
X X-𝝁 (X - 𝝁)2 σ (X − 𝝁)2
1 -1.50 2.25 𝝈𝟐 =

= = 1.25
3 0.50 0.25 𝟒
4 1.50 2.25
σ (X − 𝝁)2 So, the variance
=5 of the population
is 1.25.
