Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Parallel and

Perpendicular Lines!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on Parallel and

Perpendicular Lines!
This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

RECAP
Kinds of Angles
Angles are formed by two intersecting rays. It can be classified
according to its measure. The kinds of angles are acute, right, obtuse, straight,
and reflex.
1. Without using a protractor, what kind of angles are shown below?

a. b. c.
_________ ________ ________

2. Which of the following illustrates a right angle? Choose the letter of your
answer/s.

a. b. c. d. e.

3. Without using a protractor, how can you say that a given angle is a right
angle?

________________________________________________________________________

LESSON

Have you seen these lines at your home? School? Or in your neighborhood?
What do we call these lines in mathematics?
In the previous lesson, you have learned that there are two possibilities for
any two coplanar lines: either the lines will meet or they will not.

When two lines meet at exactly one point, the two lines are said to be

intersecting lines. In the given example below, AB ⃡
and CD intersect at point O.
Point O is called the point of intersection.

If two lines intersect, they will form four angles at the point of intersection. If
the angles formed measure 90°, then these lines are called perpendicular lines.
Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect and form right angles. The symbol ⊥ is
used to denote that the two lines are perpendicular. For instance, the figure below
shows that line a is perpendicular to line b. In symbols, a⃡⊥⃡ b.

When two coplanar lines do not intersect, they are called parallel lines. The
symbol || is used to denote that the two lines are parallel. One or two arrowhead
tick marks on parallel lines are also used to show that the lines are parallel. For
instance, in the figure below, ⃡EF is parallel to ⃡GH. In symbols, ⃡EF || ⃡GH.

EXAMPLES:

1. Identify if the following figures illustrate parallel lines or perpendicular lines.

a. b. c.
2. A chocolate company is designing a new chocolate box as shown at the right for
their Valentine’s day special. Describe each pair of edges as parallel, perpendicular,
or neither.
̅̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅̅
a. CH AO
̅̅̅̅ and HT
b. CT ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅
c. CT and LO ̅̅̅̅

3. Refer to the figure at the right and identify whether each of the following
statements is TRUE or FALSE.
̅̅̅̅̅ || EF
a. CD ̅̅̅̅
b. GH ⊥ FH
̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅
AB || ̅̅̅̅̅
c. ̅̅̅̅ GE

Solutions:
1. a. Parallel lines
b. Parallel lines
c. Perpendicular lines

2. a. Parallel
b. Perpendicular
c. Neither. The lines are noncoplanar. They are skew lines.

3. a. TRUE
b. TRUE
c. FALSE. They are skew lines.

VALUING

REFLECTION: (Journal Writing)

In our life, we encounter a lot of people. But, as the saying goes, “people come
and go”. What are the things do you consider whether you will continue your
interaction with others like intersecting lines, or just avoid meeting them like parallel
lines? Share your thoughts and write these in your notebook.
