Title: Assessment of Sub-Grade soil for a Pavement design.

Objective: The objective of this project is to familiarize the students with pavement design
mechanism.

Project Details: National Highway Authority plans to redesign a Faisalabad-Chiniot Highway for
heavy traffic to facilitate the peoples of this area. For this purpose, you are required to access the
soil index properties of required area and named the soil according to AASHTO & USCS
classification system. Furthermore, access the CBR value for the pavement design.

The following methodology is to be followed to complete this project:

 Soil sampling (most effective sampling technique should be used keeping in view the
resources).
 Performance of the required laboratory tests for classification of soil.
 Performance of required tests for pavement design.

Project Problem Attributes and Knowledge Attributes:

 Individual & Teamwork

 Methodical Way
 Effective report

Project Deliverables are:

 Test results in detail

 Classification of soil
 CBR value for pavement design
 Report including final findings
Report Sections:

Introduction (300 words):

Details of the project, explain in detail objectives and importance of study, design philosophies, any
assumptions made, include some case studies etc.

Analysis and results (1000 words)

This section analysis covers the data collection, analysis methods, mathematical models, and calculations.
Critically evaluate the study with all the steps in detail.

Conclusions (300 words):

Interpret the results in light of what you expected based on theoretical understanding, Identifies the
significant sources of error and assesses the reliability of your results, comments on any abnormalities in
the procedure that might affect results,
Identifies and explains any unusual or surprising results, present all analytical results. Lists the
conclusions reached as a result of this study, restates any limitations, assumptions or violations of
assumptions that might qualify the conclusions.
Grading with Linkage to CLOs:

S. N CLO Marks CLO

To design flexible and rigid pavements based on the results

1 14% CLO-2
