Apply Polya's four-step rule and working backwards strategies in solving the given

problem:

Problem: Stacy picks a number. She doubles the number, squares the result, divides
the square by 3, subtracts 30 from the quotient, and gets 18. What are the possible
numbers that Stacy could have picked?

I. Understand the Problem

She doubles the unknown number,

Squares the result,

Divides the square by 3,

Subtracts 30 from the quotient,

and gets 18.

To identify the possible numbers that Stacy could have picked.

II. Devise a Plan

I will use the Working Backwards problem solving strategy to devise a plan.

To solve the problem, I will do the inverse or working backwards of each

operation.

Therefore, instead of subtracting, add. Instead of dividing, multiply. Instead of

squaring, take the square root.

III. Carry out the Plan

Let, x = unknown number

x = 18

( 2 x )2
= 18
3−30
2
4x
= 48
3
2
x = (3 ÷ 4) (48) = 36
2
x – 36 = 0

( x – 6 ) = 0 or x + 6 = 0

x = 6 or x = - 6

IV. Look Back

Checking: x=6

(x–6)=0
2
x – 36 = 0
2
x = (3 ÷ 4) (48) = 36
2
4x
= 48
3

( 2 x )2
= 18
3−30

x = 18
Checking: x=6

(x–6)=0
2
x – 36 = 0
2
x = (3 ÷ 4) (48) = 36
2
4x
= 48
3

( 2 x )2
= 18
3−30

x = 18

x=-6

x+6=0
2
x – 36 = 0
2
x = (3 ÷ 4) (48) = 36
2
4x

3

( 2 x )2
= 18
3−30

x = 18
