SMA 202: Linear Algebra I

Purpose of the Course


To equip the learner with the concepts of matrix representation of linear mappings and their
applications.

Expected Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
1. Use cofactor expansion and Gaussian elimination methods to compute determinant of matrices
of order 4x4 and higher order.
2. Establish whether or not a given transformation is linear.
3. Represent linear operators and general linear mappings using matrices.
4. Use eigenvalues and eigenvectors to determine whether a given matrix is diagonalizable or not.
5. Compute the characteristic and minimal polynomials of matrices.

Course Content (Revised)


Determinants of general matrices and their properties. Gram-schimdt orthogonalization process.
Linear transformation: definition, kernel, image, rank and nullity. Matrix representation, change of
basis. Similar matrices, eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Diagonalization of matrices. Characteristic and
minimal polynomial, Cayley Hamilton Theorem.

Mode of Delivery
Class lectures, tutorials, discussions, problem solving, exercises.

Continuous assessment tests: 30%
Final examination: 70%
