sequences, polynomials, and
polynomial equations. How would you predict how many likers or reacters
you would have on Facebook in the next few
minutes if a certain pattern is noticed? Have you
calculated how much your bank account balance
will grow on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis
when saving money? These are only scenarios that
will assist you in appropriately arranging things and
making informed selections. You will study the
mathematical idea of geometric sequences in this
module.
Essential Question/s:
1. How can we recognize and efficiently use
sequences to solve difficult problems?
2. How do sequences/series affect decision-making
and problem-solving processes?
FIRM-UP
The goal of this section is to help students acquire
key concepts related to geometric sequence and
geometric series. These concepts will later be used
to solve a variety of real-life problems.
1+6+36+216+1296 = 1555
Example 2.
Determine the sum of the first 10 terms of the
sequence, 3, -6, 12, -24, …
Solution:
a 1=3 , n=10
−6
r= =−2
3
3 ( 1−(−2)10) 3 ( 1−1024 ) 3 (−1023 )
S10= = = =−1023
1−(−2) 1+2 3
Answer: The sum of the first ten terms is -1023.
Example 3.
Determine the sum of the first 7 terms of the
sequence 8000, 4000, 2000, 1000, …
Solution:
a 1=8000 , n=7
4000 1
r= =
8000 2

8000 1− 8000 1− 8000
2 128 128
S7 = = = =15875
1 1 1
1− 1−
2 2 2
Answer: The sum of the first seven terms is 15, 875.
Example 4.
The third term of a geometric sequence is 200 and
the common ratio is 0.5. What is the sum of the first
6 terms of the sequence?
Solution:
a 1=200 , r=0.5 , n=7
n−1
a n=a1 r
3−1
a 3=a1 r
2
a 3=a1 r
a3 200
a 1= 2 = 2 =800

8 00 ( 1−0.56 ) 8 00 ( 1−0.015625 )
S6 = = =1575
1−(0.5) 1−0.5
Answer: The sum of the first six terms is 1575.
Example 5.
An investment increases by half its amount every
year. If an initial investment in 2011 was estimated
to be ₱10,000,000.00, how much would be the
accumulated amount in 2019?
Solution:
a 1=10,000,000 , r=0.5 , n=9
10,000 , 000 ( 1− ( 0.5 )9 ) 10,000 , 000 (1−0.001953125 ) 10,000 ,
S9 = = =

Answer: The accumulated amount in 2019 is ₱ 19,
960,937.50.
