Introduction

CONTENT STANDARD: You will learn more about sequences in this lesson.

sequences, polynomials, and
polynomial equations. How would you predict how many likers or reacters
you would have on Facebook in the next few
minutes if a certain pattern is noticed? Have you
calculated how much your bank account balance
will grow on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis
when saving money? These are only scenarios that
will assist you in appropriately arranging things and
making informed selections. You will study the
mathematical idea of geometric sequences in this
module.

Essential Question/s:
1. How can we recognize and efficiently use
sequences to solve difficult problems?
2. How do sequences/series affect decision-making
and problem-solving processes?

 Recapitulation of the previous topic.

FIRM-UP
The goal of this section is to help students acquire
key concepts related to geometric sequence and
geometric series. These concepts will later be used
to solve a variety of real-life problems.

SUM OF THE FINITE GEOMETRIC

SEQUENCE

At this point, you already know some essential ideas

about geometric sequences. Now, you will learn
how to find the sum of the first n terms of a finite
geometric sequence.

When we get the sum of the known number of terms

in a geometric sequence, we get a finite geometric
series.

What is the sum of the first five terms of the

geometric sequence ?
Basically, the first thing to do is to find the common
ratio of the sequence to generate the next terms of
the sequence. In the given example above, the
6
common ratio (r) is equal to =6 . Therefore, the
1
first five terms of the sequence are 1,6,36,216, and
1296. Then, add the terms to find the sum.

1+6+36+216+1296 = 1555

The sum of the first five terms obtained is 1555.

You were able to find the sum by generating all the
terms and then adding them. But, how about the sum
of the first 25 terms? Are you still going to generate
all the terms?

Geometric series refers to the sum of the terms of a

geometric sequence.

The general formula for a geometric series can be

written as:
2 n
Sₙ=a1 +a 2 r +a 3 r + …+a1 r

Here is the formula for finding the sum of the first n
