Oracle UM Methodology
Oracle UM Methodology
The Oracle Unified Method presents an organized yet flexible approach. Its defined
operational framework helps anticipate essential project needs and dependencies. With OUM, you
can effectively move through the IT lifecycle to quickly achieve measurable business outcomes.
The ability to constantly update and change the program allows the system to be updated
more often. This allows fixes to take effect quickly, increasing system usability and overall
effectiveness. The faster changes are made, the more time is saved in the development process.
This also makes employees more efficient, which saves the company money on development costs
and salaries.
Project phases
Workflows within the OUM are categorized into five phases: Initiation, Elaboration,
Construction, Transition, and Production. These phases are described below:
a) Phase I - Initiation: As the first phase of the project life cycle. It focuses on achieving
concurrence of all stakeholders on the project lifecycle objectives. In this phase, high-level
reviews, business requirements, and the initial project plan are planned.
b) Phase II - Elaboration: The main focus is on elaborating detailed requirements models,
breaking down solutions, developing functional prototypes, and baseline the system
architecture.
c) Phase III - Construction: In this project life cycle, construction focuses on the design,
implementation, and testing of the functions to be developed into a complete system.
d) Phase IV - Transition: consists of the installation on the production system through UAT
(Customer Acceptance Testing) and the launch of the application live, open and ready for
business.
e) Phase V - Production: The goal of the Production phase is to operate the newly developed
system, evaluate the success of the system, and support users. This includes: monitoring
the system, taking appropriate action to ensure continued operation, measuring system
performance, operating and maintaining support systems, helping to respond to requests,
bug reports, and user requests, and managing the applicable change control process so
that defects and new features are prioritized and assigned to future releases.
Availability
OUM is available to Diamond, Platinum and Gold Oracle Partners as a subscription benefit.
Use the materials related to the implementation of programs for end users who have
acquired valid licenses for such programs;
Provide training to partner employees on the use of materials;
Demonstrate the materials to end users; and
Copy materials for archival or backup purposes.
Key Benefits
A more focused OUM effort that enables projects to clearly define business scope and needs
to create enterprise architectural models. This planning results in tighter scope control, more
accurate understanding of the business, and a firm foundation for customer acceptance.
Built-in Flexibility – By combining activities and tasks in different ways, OUM can be applied to
many types of information technology software development and implementation projects.
Save Time – Experienced IT professionals representing years of experience have contributed
their knowledge to OUM. Project teams take advantage of this experience by leveraging these
best practices along with industry standards.
Higher Quality – OUM contributes to an iterative approach that incorporates testing and
validation throughout the lifecycle, rather than quality testing being performed only at the end
of the project.
Increased cost effectiveness OUM facilitates improved project cost control through the use of
a flexible work breakdown structure that allows you to perform only the necessary tasks.
Reduced Project Risk – Implements an iterative, broadly applicable method that mitigates
requirements mismatch. A key focus of each iteration in OUM is to identify and reduce the
majority of project risks. This ensures that the most critical risks are addressed as early as
possible in the project lifecycle, resulting in a measurable reduction in schedule and budget
risks.

Microsoft Dynamics’ most successful business partners use implementation methodologies that
they have spent years on in search of a “formula” that allows for predictable and consistent
execution of systems projects. Microsoft, for its part, has been promoting the Sure Step
methodology for several years as an essential part of its business partners’ certification.
The reality of ERP system implementations is that they are much less predictable and consistent
than most clients would like. A good methodology is a necessary—certainly indispensable—
element for a successful project, but it is not sufficient on its own. The experience of the business
partner, the creativity of its consultants, the flexibility of the systems involved, and the
expectations of the client are all just as important and necessary elements as a good
implementation methodology.
