A1.
Severe shortage of blood, rare groups in particular, and associated delay in transport of willing donors, especially in rural areas, due to unawareness, lack of accessible data and absence of reliable links between hospitals, blood banks and the needy.
A2.
In case of blood requirement, the needy first approach their kin and after a sequence of calls and contacting, they hardly reach to the required donor. This is tedious, inefficient and not always dependable, especially if the blood being demanded belongs to rare groups.
Facts: Data generated through the WHO Global Database on Blood Safety (GDBS) reveal that 20% of the global population residing in the developed countries have access to 80% of safe blood supply whereas 80% of the population inhabiting the developing countries have access to only 20% of safe blood. Statistics prepared by the Association of Voluntary Blood Donors' Forum (AVBDF) on the percentage of voluntary blood donation to the total blood collection in individual states during the last one year, shows a rapid decline in the number of donors throughout India. Only five states namely Tripura, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Punjab and Maharashtra have achieved the record where the percentage of voluntary blood donation to total collection stands above 80%.
A3.
It is true we have data, and we do have donors, but what we do not have is the link, a strong reliable one. We propose here a 24x7 service, involving collection of data, the sorting and updating of the same, and above all, the innovation, the difference we wish to make: donor delivery thats just a dial away. We hope to achieve blood sustainability all throughout India.
Existing solutions to the problem are either obsolete, or have failed. Donor delivery is the innovation, the novelty, that we hope will ensure sustainability of blood. Institution based data collection focussing on colleges, and centralised easily accessible database add to the merits of the idea.
