INTERNET
The internet is a global network of interconnected computers, servers, phones, and
smart appliances that communicate with each other using the transmission control
protocol (TCP) standard to enable a fast exchange of information and files, along with
other types of services.
Key features of the internet
The internet is a vast, interconnected network of computers and other network-
enabled devices, which is:
Globally available: The internet is an international service with universal access.
People living in isolated areas of an archipelago or even in the depths of Africa can
now access the internet
Easy to use: The software used to connect to the internet (web browser) is user-
friendly and easy to understand. It’s also relatively easy to create.
Compatible with other types of media: The internet provides a high level of
engagement with photos and videos, among other media.
Affordable: internet service development as well as maintenance cost, are modest
Flexible: Internet -based communication is highly adaptable.it support text, audio, and
video communication. These services are available at both individual and
organizational level.
TYPES OF INTERNET
The term "Internet" can refer to various types of networks and technologies. Here are
some key categories:
1. Public Internet: The global network accessible by anyone, comprising websites,
email, and online services. It’s the most common type people use daily.
2. Private Networks: These are internal networks used by businesses or organizations.
They include intranets and extranets, which provide secure access to internal
resources or allow external partners to connect under controlled conditions.
3. Wireless Internet: This includes Wi-Fi networks and mobile networks (3G, 4G, 5G)

4. Satellite Internet: Uses satellites to provide internet access, particularly useful in
remote or rural areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking.
5. Fiber-Optic Internet: Uses fibre-optic cables to offer high-speed internet
connections. It's known for its high bandwidth and reliability.
6.Dial-Up Internet: An older form of internet access using telephone lines. It’s slow
compared to modern standards and has largely been replaced by broadband
technologies.
7. Broadband Internet: A high-speed internet connection that includes DSL, cable,
and fibre optic connections, offering faster speeds and more bandwidth than dial-up.
APPLICATION OF INTERNET
• Internet application is an interactive, compiled application that can be accessed through a
corporate or through the . Internet applications can perform complex business processes on
either the client or the server. In a server-based Internet application, the application uses the
Internet protocol to receive requests from a client, typically a Web browser, process
associated code, and return data to the browser
Applications of internet :
1. Communication
2. Web Browsing
3. Online Shopping
4. Real-Time Update
5. Social Media
6. Job Search
7. Education
8. Travel
9. Stock Market Update
10. Video Conferencing
1. Communication: Communication refers to exchanging ideas and thoughts between or among
people to create understanding. The communication process involves the elements of source,
encoding, channel, receiver, decoding, and feedback. In organizations, both formal and informal
communications simultaneously take place. Formal communications refer to official
communications in orders, notes, circulars, agenda, minutes, etc. Apart from formal
communications, informal grapevine communications also exist. Informal communications are
usually in the form of rumors, whispers, etc. They are unofficial, unrecorded, and spread very fast.
2. Web Browsing: Web Browsing is one of the applications of the internet. A web browser is a
program that helps the user to interact with all the data in the WWW (World Wide Web). There
are many web browsers present in today's world. Some of them are as follows: Google Chrome
Firefox Safari Internet Explorer Opera Microsoft Edge Netscape.

3. Online Shopping: The era of the internet took shopping into a new market concept, where
many virtual shops are available 24x7. The shops provide all the necessary details of a product on
their website, so the user can choose as per their needs.

4. Real-Time Update :The internet makes things easier. One can quickly get an update on the
things happening in real time in any part of the world. For example, sports, politics, business,
finance, etc. The internet is very useful in many decisions based on real-time updates.

5. Social Media: The youth of this generation spend the maximum of their free time on social
media, all thanks to the internet. Social media is a place where the user can communicate with
anyone, like friends, family, classmates, etc. User can promote their businesses on social media as
well. You can also post your thoughts, pictures and videos with your friends on social media.
6. Job Search:The internet has brought a revolution in the field of Jobs. The
candidate can search for their dream job, apply and get it very easily. Even
companies nowadays post their need on the internet and hire candidates as per
their skills based on the job role. There are many platforms which are primarily
doing this. Some of them are listed below. LinkedIn, Monster.com, Naukari.com,
Indeed, Glassdoor Upwork.

8. Travel Users: can easily search for their favourite tourist places worldwide and
plan their trips. One can book holiday trips, cabs, hotels, flight tickets, clubs, etc.,
with the help of the Internet. Some websites that provide these facilities are as
follows: goibibo.com makemytrip.com olacabs.com
9. Stock Market: Update A stock market update refers to the latest information
and news related to the financial markets, particularly the stock market. The
stock market is where individuals buy and sell publicly traded company shares.
Stock market updates include vital data and statistics, like the current prices of
major stocks, individual stock prices, trading volumes, market capitalization, and
price movements.
10. Video Conferencing Video: conferencing means using computers to provide a
video link between two or more people. It allows users in different locations to
hold face-to-face meetings. You can also see them instead of just talking to
someone on the telephone. Video conferencing is a widely accepted mode of
communication among businesses, houses, and other organizations.
CLIENTS AND SERVER
Systems on the network can usually be described as one of the
following:

Server - A system that provides services to other systems in its

network. There are file servers, boot servers, database servers,
license servers, print servers, installation servers, and even servers
for particular applications. This chapter uses the term server to
mean a system that provides file systems and installation software
for other systems on the network. Client - A system that uses
remote services from a server. Some clients have limited disk
storage capacity, or perhaps none at all, and they have to rely on
remote file systems from a server to function.

Other clients might use remote services (such as installation

software) from a server, but they don't rely on a server to
function. A standalone system, which has its own hard disk
containing the root (/), /usr, and /export/home file systems and
swap space, is a good example of this type of client.
TYPES OF INTERNET SERVICES
1. Communication services: To exchange data/information among individuals or organizations,
the internet enables communication services. This mainly includes VoIP and video
conferencing.Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) enables users to place voice calls over the
internet compared to a conventional (or analog) phone connection. Other VoIP services allow
you to contact anybody with a mobile number, encompassing long-distance, cellular, and even
local/international connections.Video conferencing technology enables two or more individuals
in separate locations to connect visually and in real time. It includes persons in different places
using video-enabled devices and broadcasting real-time speech, video, texts, and slideshows via
the internet.Other communication services based on the internet include email, internet relay
chat (IRC), and list server (LISTSERV) used for asynchronous text communication, instant
messaging, and group announcements, respectively.

2.File transfer services: We utilize file transfer to exchange, transmit, or send a document or
logical data item among many individuals or computers, both locally and remotely. Data files
may comprise documents, videos, photos, text, or PDFs. They may be shared via internet
downloading and uploading. File transfer protocol is one of the most common internet
protocols used for this purpose.

3. Directory services: A directory service is a collection of software that maintains information

about the organization, its customers, or both. Directory services are responsible for mapping
network resource names to network addresses. It offers administrators and users transparent
access to all network computers, printers, servers, and other devices. It is also an important
backend service provider for and by the internet. Domain number system (DNS) and lightweight
directory access protocol (LDAP) are the most commonly used directory services. A DNS server
stores a map of computer hostnames and other domain names to IP addresses. LDAP is a
collection of open protocols to obtain centralized network access to stored data. It is also a
mechanism for cross-platform authentication.
4.Ecommerce and online transactions: Ecommerce allows the customer to purchase a service
or product directly from the vendor, at any time or anywhere on the planet. When IBM started
offering hardware and software for computers over the internet, it was one of the first
instances of ecommerce. Since then, this service has grown in use tremendously. Ecommerce
uses the web to enable financial exchanges so that data packets can translate into their real-
world monetary equivalents.
5. Services for network management: Network management services are some of the most
critical and valuable internet services for IT administrators. They assist in avoiding, monitoring,
diagnosing, and resolving network-related issues. Two services are mainly used for this purpose
– ping and traceroute. The ping utility checks the host machine’s availability and the time
required to react to any and all internet control message protocol (ICMP) transmissions. It
guarantees that all requests issued by a computer reach the web server without packet loss. In
the meantime, the traceroute identifies and displays all potential paths from query to response,
as well as the turn around time for each route.
6. Time services: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Coordinated Universal Time synchronizes
computer clocks (UTC). Network time protocol (NTP) is an established internet time service that
syncs and adjusts the computer clock accurately to all these standards. All Windows time
variants released after Windows 2000 synchronize with an NTP server. NTPsec is primarily a
secured version of NTP.
7. Search engine services on the web: When users search for a web page through a search
engine rather than the domain name, the search engine examines the web crawler’s index of all
pages. It will study the search phrase and compare it to the database, including how often the
search terms appear on a webpage, where they appear on the site, whether they appear
together, etc. It analyzes this information to determine which websites best fit your search
query. The results are then shown in order, with those that best fit the search keyword
appearing initially. It is important to note that search engines can accept funds from
commercial entities to prioritize their websites in the results of a particular query. This is an
advert, and the search engine results will be labeled as such.
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider which is a term used to
refer to a company that provides internet access to people who
pay the company or subscribe to the company for the same. For
their services, the customers have to pay the internet service
provider a nominal fee which varies according to the amount of
data they actually use or the data plan which they purchase. An
Internet Service Provider is also known as an Internet Access
Provider or an online service provider. An Internet Service
Provider is a must if one wants to connect to the Internet.
Different Types of ISP Connections
1. DSL
2. Wi-Fi broadband
3.Mobile broadband
4.Fibre optic broadband
5.Cable broadband
Advantages:
1. The customer need not then bother with either the
technicalities or finances of investing and inventing a web browser
to work with. An ISP can readily do all of this for its customers.
2. Many ISPs, being professional companies, provide its clientele
with high-speed internet and that is not possible if one decides to
sidesteps these companies.

3. Offer a very high degree of reliability and availability

4.The ISPs are secure – they offer a tremendous deal of protection

against viruses and use only the latest software patches whilst
operating and thereby, maintaining the integrity of the browser.

5. User do not need to invest in user’s own web server.

6. ISP’s should give the best uptime guarantee.
Disadvantages:
1. Because of the range of options available in the market
and due to cut-throat competition, some of the ISPs have
been accused of violating the customers’ trust by way of
inflated pricing, data losses, etc. It is true that using an ISP
makes the customer entirely dependent on it.
2. If an Internet Service Provider is stretched thin because of
hosting too many sites on a shared server, it can compromise
the quality of the customers’ data by way of slow download
rates and poor performance of websites.
3. User need to trust user’s ISP for uptime and security.

4. ISP can directly affect user if the it gets blacklisted
