RESEARCH TOPIC

How to select a research topic

Research Methodology & Publications
Adam Birhan
2 March
1. Research before choosing a topic
2. Should not be broad
3. Know all the requirements
4. Relevant to your field of study
5. Align with current trends and hot topics
6. Aim to solve a genuine contextual problem
7. Should be researchable topic
8. Keep page or word limit in mind
9. Should spark your interest
10. Should be relevant to the supervisor’s field of study
11. Should not cause issues in data collection
12. Check availability of data collection tools

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

- It is a concise description of a problem that needs to be addressed
- It provides context for the research study.
- It is the focal point of any research
- Research Questions formulated from the Statement of the Problem

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LITERATURE REVIEW? (right to left of the

circular)
 Find out what information already exists in your Field of Research
 Identify Gaps in Literature
 Find other people working in your field
 Identify major seminal works
 Identify main methodologies and research techniques
 Identify main ideas, conclusions and theories and establish
similarities and differences
 Provide context for your own research
 Show relationship between previous studies or theories

Review of Related Literature

Identify which type of RRL that is the:
1. Thematic
2. Chronological
3. Systematic
4. Geographic
5. Meta Analysis (Stat.)
6. Gaps analysis
Four (4) contents of the RRL
1. What is known/discovered
2. What is not known- research gap
3. What should be studied next –directions for further
research
4. What hypothesis(es) can be developed base on
empirical evidence (heart of the RRL/most important)
RESEARCH GAP: HOW TO IDENTIFY
Ajit Singh March 30
www.facebook.com/AjiVoice

A research gap is simply, a topic or area for which missing or insufficient

information limits the ability to reach a conclusion for a question. It should
not be confused with a research question, however. For example, if we ask
the research question of what the healthiest diet for human is, we would
find many studies and possible answers to this question. On the other
hand, if we were to ask question of what are the effects of COVID Vaccine
on pregnant women, we would not find much existing data. This is a
research gap. Facebook.com/AjitVoice.
How to Identify Research Gap?
Considering the volume of existing research, identifying research gap can
seem overwhelming or been impossible. I don’t have time to read every
paper published on public health. Similarly, you guys don’t have time to
read every paper…. There are different techniques in various disciplines,
but we can reduce most of them down to a few steps, which are:
1. Identify your key motivating issue/question
2. Identify key terms associated with this issue
3. Review the Literature, searching for these key terms and identifying
relevant publications. Facebook.com/AjitVoice.
4. Review the Literature cited by the key publications which you located
in the above step
5. Identify issues not addressed by the literature relating to your critical
motivating issue. Facebook.com/AjitVoice.

Seven Research Gaps

Research, Methodology, Methods, Philosophy of Science, and
Scholarships
 Evidence gap
 Knowledge gap
 Practical Knowledge gap
 Methodology gap
 Empirical gap
 Theoretical gap
 Population gap
Research Gap:
A topic or area for which missing or insufficient information
limits the ability to reach a conclusion for a question.

Type of Research Gaps and corresponding Localization Strategies

Type Localization Strategy

Methodological conflict Scrutinize if findings on a certain

topic are inclusive with regard to
applied methods.

Contradictory evidence Synthesize key findings & determine

contradictions

Knowledge void (lack of) Analyze literature (google alarm)

Action-knowledge conflict Collect info about action and relate

this info to the knowledge …

Evaluation void

Theory and application void

 Search Engines
 Bibliography
(also in organizing the RRL)
TOPIC: (+) or VARIABLE: (+)
: Research Review
: Research Gap
: Research Literature Review
: empirical evidence
: determinants
: predictors
: correlates
: Meta analysis … if none (type your variable:
research review)
: Systematic Analysis
: Gaps Analysis
Characteristics of Good Referee
 Article is cited (google citation)
 The author is cited
 The journal is cited (google scholar metrix)
 On-line source
 Harzing Citation H5 – cited 1-5 times

WRITING TIPS

because of something, or the consequence of something.

base” is overworked.
4. Sentences begin and end with words – not symbols, numerals,
abbreviations, or acronyms.

weak sentence structure.
