Section 1a Logo Design Task

Setting the scene

Norwest Christian College Mathematics Advanced Page 1 of 10

You run a company called ‘Desmo’s Designs’.
The ‘client’ is a new company wanting a new logo for their products.
The client has employed ‘Desmo’s Designs’ to create their logo.
An example of your design company’s last logo is shown below, which is used by a
manufacturer of sporting equipment.
This logo contains:

 Two section of parabolas (possibly with two different equations)

 Two sections of one straight line
 A shaded region bounded by the parabolas and the straight line.
 A shaded circle

Section 1b Design Brief

Here is the ‘design brief’ for the logo you need to design for the client.

Norwest Christian College Mathematics Advanced Page 2 of 10

 You are required to use Desmos to draw the logo: www.desmos.com/calculator
 The logo must have a section in all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane.
 A variety of colours may be used.
 At least one section of the logo needs to be shaded.
 All the lines, curves and shading in the logo must be created in Desmos using
mathematical equations. Do not include words in the logo.
 The maximum number of different equations to be used is 12.
 The logo must include at least one section from each of the following:
- A straight line
- A parabola
- A cubic curve
- An absolute value graph
- A hyperbola or exponential graph
- A circle or semi-circle

Therefore, it is possible to use two semicircles in two different parts of the logo, provided
that sections of the other five graphs are also used.

Section 1c – Client Information Document

Norwest Christian College Mathematics Advanced Page 3 of 10

The client would like you to provide the following information in a document before they make
any further decisions. Your document should include:

 The domain and range of the entire logo.

 A list of every equation graphed in the logo, along with the domain and range of each
individual graph used.
 A brief explanation and summary of the:
o equations used in the logo (i.e. why did you select certain equations and how did
this enhance your logo?)
o points of intersection and shaded regions used in the logo.
 Two printouts or screenshots of your logo design - one with an x and y axis and
background grid, and one with the axis and grid hidden.
 A web link for the client to view the logo in Desmos if necessary. Please submit your link
on Canvas on or before the due date.

For all domains and ranges provided, correct interval notation is expected by the client.

Complete the following information for ‘the client’
