Chapter 8 – The Hack Driver
1. Why is the lawyer sent to New Mullion? What does he first think about the
place?
Ans: The lawyer was sent to New Mullion to serve a summons on Oliver Lutkins,
who was called to testify in a court case. He had anticipated finding a lovely and
modest little community here.
Ans: A delivery man introduced himself as Bill and befriended the lawyer. He said
he knew Lutkins and would assist the lawyer in locating him. He escorted him to
every location where Lutkins had been sighted or was known to frequent. He took
Lutkins to Fritz's business, where he played a lot of poker; Gustaff's barbershop, then
Gray's barbershop; and the pool room and a few other locations before bringing him
to Oliver's mother's property. Oliver Lutkins, on the other hand, was not discovered.
Ans: Bill informed the lawyer that Lutkins was a difficult man to apprehend. He was
always getting up to something. He owed money to several individuals, including
Bill, and had never made a single payment. He further claimed that Oliver was an
expert at deception and played a lot of pokers.
4. What more does Bill say about Lutkins and his family?
Ans: Bill informed the lawyer that he was acquainted with Lutkins' mother. He
described her as a terror. He told her about a time when he brought her a trunk and
she nearly tore his flesh off because he didn't handle it like a box of eggs. He further
Ans: No, the summons was not served that day by the storyteller.
6. Who is Lutkins?
Ans: Oliver Lutkins is a thief who lives in New Mullion, a little town in the country.
Despite the fact that he lives in a tiny town, he effortlessly deceives the lawyer who
arrives to serve him with a summons. Oliver Lutkins was the hacker driver.
7. When the lawyer reached New Mullion, did ‘Bill’ know that he was looking
for Lutkins? When do you think Bill came up with his plan for fooling the
lawyer?
Ans: Lutkins' act of taking the lawyer for a ride shows that he is a shrewd individual.
He has a natural aversion to disclosing his genuine identity to strangers.
Furthermore, as a cheat, it appears that duping newbies is second nature to him.
8. Lutkins openly takes the lawyer all over the village. How is it that no one lets
out the secret? (Hint: Notice that the hack driver asks the lawyer to keep out of
sight behind him when they go into Fritz’s.)Can you find other such subtle ways
in which Lutkins manipulates the tour?
Ans: Lutkin never lets the lawyer go to the location where the fictitious Lutkins is
supposed to be at any given moment. Bill's ability to weave stories about Lutkin's
wandering nature and to terrify the lawyer about Lutkin's mother are excellent tools.
Ans: Lutkin's neighbors were wary of meeting someone who may be easily
deceived. They wanted to laugh at the lawyer's plight.
10. After his first day’s experience with the hack driver the lawyer thinks of
returning to New Mullion to practice law. Do you think he would have
reconsidered this idea after his second visit?
Ans: The lawyer had contemplated returning to New Mullion to practice law after
his first day with the hack driver. During his second visit, however, he realized that
the hack driver had taken him for a ride (who himself was Lutkins). The townspeople
aided Lutkins in this endeavor. It's conceivable that the lawyer would have
reconsidered his decision to work thereafter becoming the town's laughing stock.
11. Do you think the lawyer was gullible? How could he have avoided being
taken for a ride?
Ans: The lawyer appears to be a naive and inexperienced individual. He's still trying
to understand how the horrible world works. He could have done a better job on his
homework before traveling to the village. If a photograph of Lutkin was available,
he may have taken it. He may have double-checked with other persons before relying
on Bill. He could have avoided sending Bill to look for Lutkin on his own.
