4-Practical Sheet-4-Bearing Plummer Block

This document is a practical sheet for the MCL 201 course at IIT Delhi, focusing on the drawing of a Plummer block (pedestal bearing). It provides a detailed description of the bearing's components, materials, and assembly instructions, along with specific drawing tasks and requirements. Students are instructed to create a half-sectional front view and a top view of the Plummer block, as well as prepare a bill of materials.

Plummer block (Pedestal bearing)

Instructions: If no indication is provided in the problem/views, assume the third angle
projection system for drawing. Consider all dimensions in mm. Missing
dimensions may be assumed suitably.

(A) Description
This bearing is used for long shafts (made of carbon steel), requiring intermediate support,
especially when the shaft cannot be introduced in the bearing end-wise. It consists of a pedestal
or base, a cap and a bush, split into two halves, and made of brasses/bronzes. The split parts
used in the assembly to facilitate easy assembly and periodical replacement of the worn-out
bushes (material” brasses/bronzes). After placing the journal (shaft) on the lower half of the
bush, kept in the base (material: cast iron), the upper half of the bush is placed and the cap (cast
iron) is then fixed to the pedestal, by means of two bolts. Flanges are provided at either end of
the bush, to prevent its axial motion. The rotary motion of the bush is prevented by a snug
provided at the bottom of the lower half bush, fitting into a corresponding hole in the base.
Figure 1 shows the cut view of a Plummer block. Instead of a snug, the bush may be provided
with square or octagonal seating to prevent the relative movement. The polygonal shaped
seating provided adjacent to the flanges, fit into the corresponding recesses in the base and the
cap. The seating used is narrow in width to reduce the amount of machining. Different bush
seating arrangement can be seen in Fig.2 (Please note that Fig.2 is given from explanation point
of view. The dimensions mentioned in Fig. 2 may be different to the provided in Fig.1. Thus,
do not use dimensions of Fig.2 in drawings).

dimensions mentioned herein in the drawings prepared by you]

(B) What to be done

Referring Fig.1, draw the following views of assembled Plummer block:

1. Half-sectional front view (Right hand side) (Marks: 6)

2. Top view (Marks: 3)

Prepare bill of materials. (Mark: 1)
