Question 8 N

The total friction drag on a flat plate in a fluid stream consists of skin friction drag and pressure drag, calculated using the formula D = 1/2 * ρ * V^2 * Cd * A. For a flat plate parallel to its long side, the drag is 11,000 N, while for the short side, it is 4,400 N, given specific values for fluid density, velocity, and drag coefficients. The document provides calculations and references for further reading on fluid dynamics and drag forces.

The total friction drag on a flat plate in a fluid stream is the sum of the skin friction drag and

the
pressure drag. The skin friction drag is caused by viscous drag in the boundary layer around the object. It
depends on the area parallel to the motion and is caused by having to drag fluid along with the object.
The pressure drag is caused by the pressure difference between the front and back of the object. It
depends on the area perpendicular to the motion²⁶.

The total friction drag can be calculated using the following formula:

D = 1/2 * ρ * V^2 * Cd * A

where D is the total friction drag, ρ is the density of the fluid, V is the velocity of the fluid, Cd is the drag
coefficient, and A is the area of the flat plate².

For a flat plate parallel to its long side, we can use a drag coefficient of 1.328². The area of the flat plate
is 0.605 m^2. Using these values and given that ρ = 891 kg/m^3 and V = 6 m/s, we can calculate that:

D = 1/2 * 891 * 6^2 * 1.328 * 0.605 = **11,000 N**

For a flat plate parallel to its short side, we can use a drag coefficient of 0.664⁴. The area of the flat plate
is 0.605 m^2. Using these values and given that ρ = 891 kg/m^3 and V = 6 m/s, we can calculate that:

D = 1/2 * 891 * 6^2 * 0.664 * 0.605 = **4,400 N**

Therefore, for a flat plate parallel to its long side, the total friction drag is **11,000 N** and for a flat
plate parallel to its short side, it is **4,400 N**.
