Case Study DMS R1 - 2

iENGINEERING partnered with a U.S. Department of Transportation client to migrate their on-premise MSSQL database to AWS RDS using Amazon Database Migration Services (DMS) due to challenges in scalability, security, and rising operational costs. The migration upgraded the database and established a robust infrastructure that improved performance, reduced costs, and ensured compliance with data protection requirements, all with virtually zero downtime. The successful transition not only addressed immediate challenges but also positioned the client for sustained growth and operational efficiency.

Migrating On-Premise MSSQL Database to AWS RDS

Using DMS
Overview
The client operates under the U.S. Department of Transportation, specializing in
managing critical data related to the nation’s highway infrastructure. Their expertise
includes overseeing data on pavement locations, materials, climate factors, traffic
patterns, and performance metrics, enabling strategic infrastructure planning and data-
driven decision-making.
They offer a comprehensive suite of advanced solutions for efficient construction,
maintenance, and preservation of highways. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and
robust data management practices, they equip decision-makers with tools for growth.
Their commitment includes ongoing support, scalable infrastructure, and innovative
processes that foster seamless operations and highly informed planning to meet
evolving transportation needs.

Challenge
The client previously managed their database infrastructure in a virtualized environment
hosted on EC2 instances with EBS storage. However, as data requirements grew, the
existing infrastructure reached its capacity, creating several challenges. The on-
premises database infrastructure was unable to efficiently scale to meet expanding data
demands. Managing complex data became increasingly difficult due to storage
limitations and operational inefficiencies. Security and compliance risks arose as
maintaining sensitive data on-premises became costly and resource-intensive.
Furthermore, the rising operational and maintenance costs, including hardware refresh
cycles and software licensing, placed significant strain on the client’s IT budget. These
limitations underscored the urgent need for modernization to enhance scalability,
security, and operational efficiency while addressing the growing data demands.
Solution
To overcome these challenges, iENGINEERING partnered with the client to migrate
their critical database from EC2 to Amazon RDS using AWS Database Migration
Service (DMS). The process included upgrading the database from Oracle 12.0 to
Oracle 19.0, enabling access to advanced features and enhanced functionality. A
robust, scalable infrastructure was developed, incorporating automatic scaling, high
availability, and fault tolerance to support both current and future operational needs.
DMS ensured a seamless migration with virtually zero downtime and reduced risk of
data loss. Security was a key focus, with measures implemented to protect sensitive
information and ensure compliance with data protection requirements. The diagram
below illustrates how Oracle databases are migrated to AWS using DMS. This design is
tailored to meet growing demands and deliver consistent performance throughout and
beyond the migration process.

Outcome Achieved
The migration delivered transformative results for the client. The new infrastructure
significantly improved scalability, enabling it to efficiently handle growing data demands.
Performance enhancements allowed for more effective data management and
infrastructure planning, empowering data-driven decision-making. Operational costs
were reduced through optimized database hosting and maintenance expenses, easing
the financial burden on the client. Compliance with security and data protection
requirements was ensured, safeguarding sensitive information throughout the migration
process. The transition was completed with virtually zero downtime, maintaining
uninterrupted operations.
This enhanced migration strategy not only resolved the client’s immediate challenges
but also prepared them for sustained growth. By providing a scalable, secure, and high-
performance infrastructure, the solution demonstrated the value of leveraging AWS
DMS to deliver long-term operational benefits. It highlighted the importance of sound
engineering principles and a deep understanding of operational needs in achieving
successful outcomes.
