Intro To Periodic Motion - Spring Mass System

The document covers the topic of periodic motion, specifically focusing on simple harmonic motion (SHM) and its characteristics, including amplitude, frequency, and period. It outlines the necessary conditions for SHM, provides examples, and discusses the spring mass system as a fundamental oscillator. Additionally, the document includes formulas and example problems for calculating the period, frequency, and force constant of oscillating systems.

Periodic Motion
is the motion of an object that
Periodic Motion repeat its path regularly after
equal time of interval
Periodic Motion
Oscillatory Motion Non-Oscillatory Motion
Object moves back and Object DOESN’T move back
forth from a fixed point and forth from a fixed point
.
Simple Harmonic Motion
(SHM)
Oscillatory Motion Non-Simple Harmonic
System

 A type of periodic motion where an object

oscillates back and forth about an equilibrium
position.
 The restoring force acting on the object is
directly proportional to its displacement from
the equilibrium position and acts in the opposite
direction of the displacement
Key Conditions for SHM
1. Restoring force: A force that always acts
towards the equilibrium position and is
proportional to the displacement.
2.Negligible friction: Friction should be minimal to
avoid damping the motion.
3. Small oscillations: refers to displacements that
are significantly smaller than the dimensions of
the system.
Examples of SHM:
• A mass attached to a spring oscillating back
and forth.
• A simple pendulum swinging back and forth.
• A vibrating tuning fork.
SPRING MASS SYSTEM
 The simplest form of a simple harmonic oscillator is a
body of mass m oscillating on one end of an elastic spring
also known as the spring-mass system.
 Spring Mass System - A block attached to a spring moving
on a frictionless surface.
A block attached to a spring moving on a frictionless surface.
a. Stretched spring. When the block is
displaced to the right of equilibrium (x > 0),
the force exerted by the spring acts to the
left.

b. When the block is at its equilibrium position

(x = 0), the force exerted by the spring is
zero.

c. Compressed spring. When the block is

displaced to the left of equilibrium (x < 0),
the force exerted by the spring acts to the
right.
Characteristics of SHM:
1. Period: The time it takes for one complete
oscillation.
2. Frequency: The number of oscillations per unit
time.
3. Amplitude: The maximum displacement from the
equilibrium position.
4. Angular frequency (ω): This is a measure of how
quickly an object oscillates in SHM. ω = 2πf.
Formulas for Spring Mass System
Example 1

A horizontal spring (k=300N/m) with a

mass of 0.75 kg attached to it is
undergoing SHM. Calculate the period,
frequency, and angular frequency of
the oscillator.
Example 2

When a 2.5kg object is suspended from

a spring, the spring stretches by 0.05m.
The restoring force is 300N.
a. What is its force constant?
b. If the suspended mass is set into
vibration, what will be its frequency?
Try This 1

A spring attached to a 0.5kg block is

stretched horizontally across a
frictionless floor 0.25m by an applied
force of 250N. Calculate the frequency
and period of this spring mass system
