Lesson 28

Interrogative Words & Pronouns


Definition: An interrogative pronoun, word or question word is a function word used to ask
a question, such as what, which, when, where, who, whom, whose, why, whether, how etc.
They are sometimes called wh-words, because in English most of them start with wh-. They
may be used in both direct questions and in indirect questions.

A direct question  Where is he going?

An indirect question  I wonder where he is going.

In English the same forms are also used as relative pronouns in certain relative clauses
(The country where he was born) and certain adverb clauses (I go where he goes).

Examples

Whom did you give the letter to?

Whom is she calling?

What do you want?

What movies do you usually watch?

which Which of you speaks English?

whose Whose cup of tea is this?

why Why don't you believe me?

where Where do your parents live?

when When will they finish it?

Subject and Object Question

Rules:
 When a question is asked of the subject, an auxiliary verb is not used after the
interrogative word.
 When a question is asked of the object, an auxiliary verb is used after the
interrogative word.

Who ate the cookies? Who is a singer?


What helps you to concentrate? Who are they?
Who constructed the Berlin Wall? Who is a sales manager?
What makes me happy? What do you need?
Who wrote a letter two days ago? What is this?
Who runs in the garden? What do you love the most?
Who knows his last name? Who is at the exam?
