CHAPTER ONE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an accepted skills
programs which forms part of the approved academic standards in the degree
programs for Nigerian Polytechnics. In 1974, the Federal Government of Nigeria
introduced the national policy on Industrial Training, called the Students Industrial
Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). This program is under the umbrella of the
Ministry of Education through the Industrial Training Education / Experience in
their fields of study and other related professions.

This effort which was created in order to bridge the existing gap between the
theory taught in the classroom and practice of science, agriculture, medicine,
engineering, technology and other professional programs is aimed at exposing the
students to the use of various machines and Equipments, professional work
methods and ways of safeguarding the work areas in industries as well as elaborate
practical understanding to students with respect to their various disciplines. It is
also intended that the student through a process of relation to academics
knowledge and practical industrial application would understand the underlying
principles and become better focused and acquire the practical applications
towards excellence in his or her discipline.
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) involves the students,
the Institution and the Industries. This training is funded by the Federal
Government of Nigeria and jointly coordinated by Industrial Training Fund (ITF)
and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

1.2 BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES

Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is one of the Industrial
Training Fund (ITF) program. It was designed to give Nigerian students studying
occupationally-related courses in higher institutions the experience that will
supplement the theoretical learning. SIWES unit in the University Maiduguri was
established in the year 1986 as an industrial coordinating unit catering for mostly
science students and some art based students on industrial attachment. The
foundation classes were four that comprised of an industrial coordinator who is
responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the day to day running of the affair of the
office, a secretary / typist and office assistance. SIWES unit was finally and
officially commissioned on July, 2006.

As an accredited requirement by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the

unit was formally upgraded to directorate under the leadership of Vice Chancellor,
Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi. Over the years the clientele student’s
population increased. The directorate has been doing its work with significant
impact on students.

1.3 BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was introduced into
the curriculum of Nigeria tertiary institution in 1974, as one of the functions of
Industrial Training Fund (ITF). Industrial Training Fund (ITF) was established
under the Decree No 47 of the October, 1971.
In Nigeria, the duration of SIWES ranges from three months to one year

depending on the institution and course of study in particular.

OBJECTIVES
The programme of SIWES is designed to achieve the following objectives:

• Provision of avenue for students to acquire industrial skills and experience

during their course of study.

• To prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after
graduation.

• To provide students with opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in

real work situations, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.

• To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling Equipments

and machineries that they may not be available in their schools.
