Precalculus: Part 1

Module 1 & 2 Application Problems

Directions
At the end of each module you will have application problems that will help you apply the skills taught throughout
the module. You will only submit your work to these application problems in the modules listed on the course
page.

Be sure to save this document where you know how and where to find it. This template is a place for you to show
your work and present your solutions. Make sure your work is clear and you show all of your steps that you took to
solve the application problem.
You CAN do your work on paper, take an image of your work, and paste that image onto this template.

Choose TWO problems from each module to complete. Circle the two
questions from each module you selected to solve.
Module 1: (Pick 2)
1. XYZ Moving Trucks
2. XYZ Moving Company Prices
3. XYZ Moving Company Value
4. XYZ Moving Company Box Sizes
Module 2: (Pick 2)
1. Find the best discount
2. Taxes and Profit Decisions
3. Pendulum Swing
4. XYZ Training Test Scores

Module 1 & 2 Application Problems

Module 1 Application Problem #1

Imagine you own the XYZ Moving Company and you want to organize your moving trucks based on their colors.
There are 7 red trucks, 8 blue trucks, 4 yellow trucks, 5 black trucks, and 5 other trucks painted in other colors.

a) Draw a set diagram that maps the color of the trucks to their quantity.
b) Write a table that maps the color of the trucks to their quantity.
c) Is this mapping a relation or a function?
d) Define the domain and range?
e) If this is a function, is it a one-to-one function? Why or why not?
f) Suppose you decide to break out the trucks of other colors into their specific colors. If there are 2 purple
trucks and 3 orange trucks, would any of your answers for parts a-e of the question change? Why or why not?

Module 1 Application Problem #2

The price XYZ Moving charges its customers to move their stuff is based on the distance XYZ must go. If the
distance to travel is less than or equal to 100 miles, they charge $5 per mile. If the distance is greater than 100
miles but less than or equal to 200 miles, the cost is $4.50 per mile. For distances over 200 miles, the cost is
$4 per mile.

a) Write a piecewise function that illustrates this scenario including the corresponding domain and range of
each piece.
b) Graph the function.
c) What would you suggest to someone whose move is 98 miles away to reduce the cost of their move?
d) What would you suggest to someone whose distance is 190 miles to reduce the cost of their move?

Module 1 Application Problem #3

The value of XYZ Moving Company has gone up and down over the 10 years it has been in business. This graph
shows the value of the company over these years.
a) Estimate the periods of time when the company’s value was increasing.
b) Estimate the periods of time when the company’s value was decreasing.
c) Estimate the average rate of change from year 1 to year 4.
d) Estimate the average rate of change from year 1 to year 7.
e) If someone bought the company in year 3 and sold it again in year 9, what would be the average rate of
change on their investment? Would this be a good investment for them? Why or why not?
f) Estimate the local (relative) maximum since the time the company began.
g) Estimate the local (relative) minimum after year 3.
h) Estimate the absolute minimum?
i) Estimate the absolute maximum?
j) Can a local extrema also be an absolute extrema sometimes? When?
k) When would be the best time to purchase and sell the company? Clearly state your conclusion and use
evidence to support it.

Module 1 Application Problem #4

The standard size boxes that XYZ Moving Company uses are labeled size 2, 4, and 8. If XYZ’s box is size x,
then the conversion between XYZ’s box and the box of its competitor Q Rentals is 𝑞 = 1/2(𝑥 + 4). Another
moving company, Rover’s Rigs uses box sizes that are 3 times the size number of Q Rentals’ box sizes.

a) What is the equivalent box size of Rover’s Rigs boxes to XYZ’s boxes sizes 2, 4, and 8?
b) What are the two different ways you could solve this composition of functions problem? Which one
do you feel works better in this situation?

Module 2 Application Problem #1

XYZ Moving Company offers two different discounts. The graphs of discounts f(x) and g(x) are below.

a) Estimate the price of the move for f(g(300)) and g(f(300)).

b) Estimate the price of the move for f(g(500)) and g(f(500)).

c) Estimate the domain and range of f composed of g. What does the discount f composed of g mean?

d) Estimate the domain and range of g composed of f. What does the discount g composed of f mean?

e) Which combination of discounts is the best deal for the customer?

Module 2 Application Problem #2

XYZ Moving Company uses some large trucks that the government requires them to pay taxes on. They can either
pay $1000 a day or they can pay 5% of their profit each day.
The equation for the profit they make each day based on the number of deliveries they have is the following:
𝑝 𝑥 = −0.09𝑥 2 + 75𝑥 − 500
Your job is to decide which tax option is the better option for the company.

a) Graph the profit function.

b) Explain the transformations that each tax option imposes on the original profit graph.

c) Graph the profit function with the different tax transformations applied.

d) Compare the graphs of the two different tax options.

e) Which one will have the higher profit after taxes?

Module 2 Application Problem #3

The length of time 𝑇 (in seconds) it takes a pendulum to make 1 full swing is given by the function
𝑙
𝑇 = 2π 32.2

where 𝑙 is the length of the pendulum in feet.

a) Graph the function.

b) Now graph 𝑇(𝑙 + 1), 𝑇(𝑙 + 2), and 𝑇(𝑙 + 3).

c) How does increasing the length of the pendulum change the length of time it takes the pendulum to make
a full swing?

d) Now graph the 𝑇(2𝑙), 𝑇(3𝑙), and 𝑇(4𝑙).

e) How does multiplying the length by 2, 3, and 4 change the length of time it takes the pendulum to make a
full swing?

points of the number 82 will pass the test. Write this statement using absolute value notation and use the
variable x for the score.
