MAINTENANCE MANUAL
• Primary Procedure: Step 2.B.(1)
Primary procedure uses either of the following:
– Capital Avionics CA-230 digital compass calibrators
– MC-2 magnetic compass calibrators
• Alternate Procedure: Step 2.B.(2)
Alternate procedure uses aircraft Inertial Navigation System (INS) as heading
reference.
(1) Primary Procedure
(a) Position aircraft on certified compass rose.
(b) Using applicable compass calibrator, comply with compass swing using test set
instructions.
NOTE: Proceed to Step 2.C.(1).
(2) Alternate Procedure
NOTE: Alternate procedure can be used to swing compass. A compass rose can be used if
accuracy can provide a maximum ½° error.
Instead of compass rose, a calibrated magnetic sighting compass may be used. To
take a reading, compass should be located a considerable distance fore and aft of
aircraft and moved back and forth from line of sight coinciding with fore and aft
(longitudinal) axis of aircraft. When a sight is taken facing aft, 180° must be added or
subtracted from sighting compass reading. When facing forward, compass reads
directly. If a sighting compass with card modified with a reciprocal card, 180°
correction will be disregarded and card read directly facing aft.
Dual INS must be installed. Single INS may be used if verified accurate to within 1° of
a surveyed north-south line.
Dual INS may be used if verified accurate to within ±2° on Inertial Navigation Units
(INU) that contain most recent magnetic software and ±3° on INUs that contain older
magnetic map.
This procedure may not be used if the following occurs:
• INS displays a SYS invalid condition
• There is greater than 2° of difference between INS units on any heading
• More than 1° difference between single INS and north-south line
• Aircraft with magnetic heading input to doppler system
Compass heading will be read on HSI heading card display and RMI heading card.
These readings must agree ±2°.
(a) Start APU. Refer to GIII Airplane Flight Manual (AFM).
(b) On non-VSCF aircraft, select switches in BUS CONTROL section of cockpit overhead
panel as follows:
• MAIN switch NORM
• SEC switch NORM
• INST AC switch NORM
(c) On VSCF aircraft, ensure AUX PWR switch is ON (depressed) in ELECTRIC MASTER

section of cockpit overhead panel.
CAUTION: MOVING AIRCRAFT DURING INS / GYRO SPINUP MAY DAMAGE
COMPONENTS.
(d) Power up INS as follows:
1 Align INUs per manufacturer instructions.
2 On Mode Selector Unit (MSU), select NAV mode when INS READY NAV light comes
on.
(e) On pilot and copilot compass controller, comply with the following:
1 Select LATITUDE switch correction to local latitude and hemisphere.
2 Ensure COMPASS switch is selected to MAG mode.
(f) Comply with compass swing as follows:
NOTE: Allow compass system to warm up and stabilize at least 10 minutes before
complying with compass swing.
1 Determine magnetic heading.
2 Using tug, position aircraft to a north heading and adjust position on compass rose
until aircraft is aligned to north-south (000° magnetic).
NOTE: Verify accuracy of INS by reading INS true heading on Control Display Unit
(CDU) ± magnetic variation from compass rose with known magnetic
heading of aircraft.
3 Record true heading of both INSs and compute true heading average as follows:
THA = (TH1 + TH2) ÷ 2
4 Compute magnetic heading of aircraft using true heading average and local
magnetic variation with one of following equations:
• MH = THA + VAR (westerly variations)
• MH = THA − VAR (easterly variations)
(g) Comply with single cycle error (accomplish for each system) as follows:
1 Comply with the following if any compass component has been replaced:
a On compass remote compensators, comply with the following:
• Ensure index error adjustments are indexed at zero (adjust if necessary)
• Set north / south and east / west compensators to neutral
• Set transmission error angle and magnitude adjustment to zero
b On standby compass, set north / south and east / west compensators to
neutral.
2 Calculate and record north heading deviation and its sign for each compass system
as follows:
DN = (MH)n - (CH)n
3 Using tug, position aircraft to a south heading (180° magnetic) as read on INS true
heading average adjusting aircraft until aligned with north / south lines.
4 Repeat Step 2.B.(2)(g)2, for South heading deviation and record.

5 Calculate and record single cycle error coefficient as follows:
C = (Dn - Ds) ÷ 2
6 On standby compass and compass remote compensators, adjust north / south
compensator.
7 Using tug, position aircraft to a magnetic heading of east (090° magnetic) as read on
INS true heading adjusted ± variation.
8 Calculate and record East deviation.
9 Repeat Steps 2.B.(2)(g)7 and 2.B.(2)(g)8 for west heading (270° magnetic)
deviation.
10 Calculate and record single cycle error coefficient as follows:
(De − Dw) ÷ 2
11 On standby compass and compass remote compensators, adjust east / west
compensator to compass heading west (single cycle error).
(h) Comply with index error adjustment as follows:
1 Calculate and record index error coefficient (A) as follows:
(De + Dw + Dn + Ds) ÷ 4 =
2 On compass remote compensators, adjust index by rotating adjustment.
NOTE: Rotate adjustment index as follows:
• Clockwise if index error coefficient is positive
• Counterclockwise if index error coefficient is negative
(i) Comply with transmission error adjustment as follows:
1 Using tug, comply with the following:
a Using INS CDU as reference, position aircraft to a magnetic heading of 000.00°
(north) and record compass heading deviation.
b Repeat above step in 30.00° increments to a final position of 180.00°.
c Position aircraft to magnetic heading which shows largest positive compass
heading deviation.
2 Adjust transmission error knob (marked 0 - 180) to compass heading showing
largest deviation by loosening locking nut on center shaft and increasing magnitude
adjustment until compass heading indicates magnetic heading.
(j) Prepare compass correction cards as follows:
1 Starting at present position, make a twenty-four point swing positioning aircraft on
each 15° magnetic heading increment and recording findings in Table 501.
2 Calculate and record residual deviation between magnetic heading and compass
heading for standby compass and remote compensated compass system.
NOTE: If residual deviation exceeds 2° between magnetic heading and compass
heading for remote compensated compass systems or 5° for standby
compass, compass systems must be compensated again.

3 Fill in compass correction cards by recording magnetic headings and compass
headings.
4 Calculate heading for STEER COLUMN as follows:
Steer Heading = To Fly Heading + Compass Heading − Magnetic Heading
5 Record steer headings on compass correction cards.
(k) On MSU, select INUs to OFF.
CAUTION: MOVING AIRCRAFT WITHIN 5 MINUTES AFTER POWERING DOWN INS
/ GYRO SYSTEMS MAY DAMAGE COMPONENTS.
(l) Ensure aircraft is not moved for 5 minutes after powering down INUs.
(m) On non-VSCF aircraft, select switches in BUS CONTROL section of cockpit overhead
panel as follows:
• MAIN switch OFF
• SEC switch OFF
• INST AC switch OFF
(n) On VSCF aircraft, select AUX PWR switch to off (extended) in ELECTRIC MASTER
section of cockpit overhead panel.
(o) Shut down APU. Refer to GIII AFM.
C. Follow On
(1) Inspect for presence of foreign objects.
CAUTION: FAILURE TO USE NONMAGNETIC SCREWS MAY CAUSE ERRONEOUS
READING WITH COMPASS SYSTEM.
(2) Replace flux valve access covers using nonmagnetic screws.
(3) Record all maintenance actions in accordance with current governing authority.
