Dear Students

Welcome to the course of Microbial Ecology or "Biosistemas Ecológicos". In this class, I will try
to give you an overview of some of the research we did in my laboratory. I am well aware that
this is a very limited approach to Microbial Ecology, but I prefer to talk about things we have
studied instead of trying to cover this very interesting area of research. There are a lot of
interesting books on Microbial Ecology and please feel free to consult them and even better to
read some.
My field of research has focused initially on soil processes, such as C and N mineralization,
modelling, greenhouse gas emissions, soil remediation, but has more and more veered towards
soil microbial ecology. I wanted to better understand what role different microorganisms play in
soil processes. Lately, I have been trying to study survival of microorganisms in soil as there is a
huge interest in the use "biofertilizer" to improve crop yields. As a soil scientist, I have serious
doubts about this new approach, and I hope I can explain why.
My classes are flexible, so I normally include new research that we have been doing lately,
but if there is something that you want me to talk about, please feel free to suggest other topics.
My classes also focus on publishing research and what might be required to do so. As such, I will
try to give some examples of experimental designs and pitfalls we must try to avoid, based on
my experience. As a researcher, we always must be willing to learn new approaches, techniques
concepts etc. I hope you pick something up from my classes.
Additionally, I try to invite some researcher to give a talk about their ongoing research.

Sincerely
Luc Dendooven

Some topics that will be covered and based on published research or ongoing research in my lab.
I have annexed some publications, but there is of course much more information available in the
literature. Feel free to consult it so that we can debate some of the topics listed below.
