1. Calculate the value of Kc for esterification reaction at equilibrium, starting from equimolar mixture of 1
mol of each reactant in 1L mixture. Knowing that at equilibrium n (ester) formed is 0.66 mol.
2. We mix 1 mol of ethanol with 2 mol of acid. At a certain time (t), the composition of the mixture is as
following: 0.3 mol of ethanol, 1.3 mol of acid, 0.7 mol of ester, and 0.7 mol of water. Knowing that the
equilibrium constant Kc = 4
2.1. Justify whether the system of the reaction reaches equilibrium state.
2.2. If not, what reaction will take place to reach equilibrium.
2.3. The system reached equilibrium state, calculate the molar concentration of different components if
the volume of the mixture is 500 ml.
2.4. Determine the yield of the reaction.
3. Ammonia is synthesized according to the following equation at 500 oC.
3 H2 (g) + N2 (g) ↔ 2 NH3 (g)
The following two experiments are performed:
Experiment 1: the initial concentration of nitrogen and hydrogen gas is 1 mol.L-1. At equilibrium: 0.92
mol.L-1 for nitrogen, 0.763 mol.L-1 for hydrogen and 0.157 mol.L-1 for ammonia
Experiment 2: the initial concentration of nitrogen, hydrogen and ammonia are respectively 2, 1, and 3
mol.L-1. At equilibrium: 2.59, 2.77 and 1.82 mol.L-1 respectively.
For each experiment calculate the equilibrium constant Kc
4. A mixture contains 2 mol of NO gas and 1 mol of Cl2 gas reacts at temperature 250C in 2L flask. The
equation of the reaction is: 2 NO (g) + Cl2 (g) ↔ 2 NOCl (g)
At equilibrium: the total number of mole of gaseous mixture is 2.2 mol.
4.1. Make a table of conversion in terms of x (where x is the number of mol of
chlorine gas that reacts to reach equilibrium state.)
4.2. Express equilibrium constant Kc in terms of x.
4.3. Calculate the mole quantity of each chemical species present at
equilibrium state.
4.4. Deduce the value of equilibrium constant Kc.
4.5. Let (α) be the degree of conversion of NO gas to NOCl. Calculate the
value of (α).
4.6. Determine the % yield of the reaction.
5. 0.05 mol of SO2 gas and 0.1 mol of O2 gas are introduced into a flask of volume 1L at temperature of
5270C. the following reaction takes place: SO2 (g) + 1/2O2 (g) ↔ SO3 (g)
At equilibrium the number of mole of SO3 gas is 0.02 mol.
Let (α) be the degree of conversion of SO2 gas at equilibrium and x is the number of mol of SO2 gas that
reacts to reach equilibrium state.
5.1. Make a table of conversion in terms of (α)
5.2. Express equilibrium constant Kc in terms of (α).
5.3. Calculate the mole quantity of each chemical species present at
equilibrium state.
5.4. Deduce the value of equilibrium constant Kc.
5.5. The same experiment is repeated but with one modification (T = 650oC). At equilibrium state (α)
= 0.3. Determine the new value of equilibrium constant Kc.
6. Consider the following hypothetical reversible reaction 2A (g) + B (g) ↔ 3 C (g) with 1.8 mol of each
reactant is initially introduced in the reaction medium.
6.1. Express the number of mole of the component of mixture
obtained at equilibrium in terms of α (where α is the degree of conversion of reactant B)
6.2. Express the value of Kc in terms of α
6.3. Calculate the mole composition of the mixture at equilibrium and
the value of Kc if α = 0.2
6.4. Determine the %yield of the reaction.
