HW 3 CM II

This document outlines the homework assignment for PHYS 424: Classical Mechanics II at Gebze Technical University for the Spring 2024 semester. It includes six problems related to classical mechanics concepts such as Lagrangian mechanics, orbital dynamics, and potential energy calculations. Students are instructed to work independently and submit their solutions clearly by the due date.

GEBZE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY PHYSICS DEPARTMENT

PHYS 424 : CLASSICAL MECHANICS II

2024 Spring Semester, Homework III ( Thursday, April 25, 2024 )

INSTRUCTIONS :
1. You cannot ask someone to show you how to completely solve the problem, nor can you accept
such extensive help.

2. Under no circumstances should you copy or even look at someone’s solutions.

3. Write down your solutions clearly and readable. Submit them on the due date during the lecture.

1) Two masses m and M are connected by a string of constant total length

l. The string might be assumed massless. The mass m can rotate with the
string (with varying partial length r) on the plane. The string leads from m
through a hole in the plane to M , where the mass M hangs from the tightly
stretched string (with the also variable partial length l − r). Depending on the
values ω of the rotation of m on the plane, the mass system can glide upward
or downward. Hence, the mass M moves only along the z-axis.
a) What is the constraint in this motion ?
b) Write the Lagrangian of this system.
c) What is the ignorable coordinate ?
d) What is the first integral of the motion ?
e) Write Lagrange equations of motion ?
f ) Write the Hamiltonian of this system.
g) Obtain Hamilton’s equations of motion.
h) What is the total energy of this system ?

2) A comet of mass 1.2 × 1010 kg moves in an elliptical orbit around the Sun.
Its distance from the Sun ranges between 0.5 AU and 50 AU. Note that the
astronomical unit (AU) is the average distance from Sun to Earth = 149.6
million km.
a) What is the eccentricity of its orbit ?
b) What is its period ?
c) At aphelion what is the potential energy of the comet-Sun system ?
3) Calculate the amount of work required to move an Earth satellite (mass m)
from a circular orbit of radius 2RE to one of radius 3RE .

4) Show that the minimum period of a satellite orbiting a spherical planet with
uniform density ρ is
r

Tmin =

independent of the planet’s radius.

5) An object orbits in a central potential U (r). Its orbit is r = a e−bθ , where

θ is the azimuthal angle measured in the orbital plane. Find U (r).

6) A particle of mass m is bound by a linear potential U = kr.

a) For what energy and angular momentum will the orbit be a circle of radius
r about the origin ?
b) What is the angular frequency of this circular motion ?
c) What is the effective potential ?
