voltage
36. Explain how IM can be started by means of smooth variation of supply frequency.
37. Practical:
Implement Four-Quadrant Single-Phase Rectifier DC Drive with circulating current
38. A 400V, 15kW dc shunt motor takes 42A, and runs at a speed of 1200 rpm. The shunt
field resistance is 200 Ω. Assume that the load torque varies as the square of the speed.
Neglect iron and friction losses, and armature reaction. Calculate
a) The resistance to be connected in series with the armature to reduce the speed to
1000 rpm
b) The voltage to be applied to the armature for 1000 rpm, had the control
accomplished by Ward-Leonard method
39. A motor operates on a periodic duty cycle in which it is clutched to its lord for 10 min
and declutched to run on no load for 20min. minimum temp. rise is 400 C. Heating and
cooling time constants are equal and have a value of 10 min. when load is declutched
continuously the temp. rise is 150 C. Determine
i. Maximum temp. during the duty cycle.
ii. Temp. when the load is clutched continuously
40. A motor equipped with a flywheel is to supply a load torque of 100 N-m for 10 sec
followed by a light load period of 200 N-m long enough for the flywheel to regain its
steady – state speed. It is desired to limit the motor torque to 700 N-m. What should be
the moment of inertia of flywheel? Motor has a inertia of 10 kg –m2. It’s no load speed is
500 rpm and the slip at a torque of 500 Nm is 5%. Assume speed torque characteristics of
motor to be a straight line in the region of interest
