Synpol®D

1. Description

1.1 Brief Description

SynpolâD is a compact device used for the control and protection of generators and diesel
engines. In addition, SynpolâD is equipped with a power management system that includes
automatic connection to big consumers for controlling the entire mains system of the ship.
Because of its modular structure, the system is not influenced by any central control unit.
Since a SynpolâD control device is assigned to each generator panel, all generator panels are
identically constructed. A two-wire bus communication (CAN bus) connects the SynpolâD
control devices to each other. In case of the failure of one device, the others will continue
operating. Each SynpolâD device incorporates all important functions necessary for power
management. Thus, the system of independent and autonomous electric diesel engines has
been consistently developed for switching gears, control and monitoring (modular
independent systems). Optional, a PC-Monitor system can be connected if the CAN
communication is in use.

A Synpol®D device is mounted on the front of the door of each generator panel. The control
panel of the Synpol®D device contains elements for displaying all of a generator’s important
values. These values, permanently indicated on green seven-segment LE-displays, are:

1) Generator voltage,
2) Generator current,
3) Generator power,
4) Generator frequency, and
5) Generator power factor.

In addition to the seven-segment displays, a generator’s current and power are shown by
analog indication with continuous green light bands that turn red after passing the 100% mark.

Further, there is a large LC-display on the Synpol®D control panel, which provides the
following information:

1) Diesel engine status display,

2) Measuring data of generator,
3) Display of incoming alarms in case of exceeding value limits,
4) Status display of total plant when power management operation is in use,
5) Display of parameters and limits for input when the programming mode is selected, and
6) Status display of internal computers.

4 SYNPOL® D
USER'S MANUAL

In addition, all values can be entered via a keyboard on the Synpol®D control panel. Some of
the keys are also used for operating the diesel engine, so there is no need for a separate
programming device. The key "Acknowl." serves for acknowledgment and resets stored
alarms.

Two red LED's for "Alarm" and "Tripped" are also located on the Synpol®D control panel. In
case a limit is surpassed triggering an alarm, the LED "Alarm" will blink. After the alarm
delay time has run down, the LED "Alarm" will turn to a steady light and remain on until the
triggering value falls below the limit value and the key "Acknowl." is pressed.

If a limit triggering the generator breaker is surpassed, the LED "Tripped" will blink. After the
end of the delay time, the LED "Tripped" will turn to a steady light and remain on until the
triggering value falls below the limit value and the key "Acknowl." is pressed.

The Synpol®D device is controlled by means of several microcontrollers that monitor each
other. Important functions are laid out in a double-redundancy combination, with the second
channel operating independently and without a processor.

The short-circuit protection operates parallel to the microcontroller and does so even if the
entire supply voltage fails.

The Synpol®D device has several connectors installed on its back that link it to the terminal
boards. These terminal boards are mounted in the generator panel of the switchboard and are
connected to the control unit via terminal blocks. The cables connecting the terminal boards to
the control unit are shielded on both sides.

The following terminal boards can be connected:

1) Terminal board CMA 131 -- Generator connection
2) Terminal board CMA 132 -- Generator relay
3) Terminal board CMA 133 -- Differential protection and earth-fault monitoring
4) Terminal board CMA 134 -- Resistor

1.3 Display and Control Panel

On the illustration below, the Synpol®D display and control panel is shown. Located on the
upper section of the panel are five seven-segment LE-displays, two light bands, and a large
LC-display. On the section below the LC-display, there is the keyboard.
The numbers shown highlighting various elements on the illustration of the control panel are
subject to the following descriptions.

Pic. 1.3 Synpol®D display and control panel

1.3.1 Display Elements

The display elements on the control panel include five seven-segment displays for the highly
visible representation of a generator’s most important data; two light bars, which in tandem
with two of the five seven-segment displays indicate current and power; LEDs for the alarm
status, and a large LC-display for detailed operating information and for reading and editing
the parameters.

1) The Seven-Segment Displays

Five seven-segment LE-displays show the voltage, current, active (true) power, frequency,
and the power factor of the generator with a precision of three-digits. The value of the
power factor can be either capacitive or inductive. For example, a zero in front of the
decimal point shows capacitive power and a minus in front shows inductive power of the
generator. (However, in island operation the generator compensates the inductive power of
the consumption with capacitive power. In this case, the cos(j)-value will be shown with a
zero in front of the decimal point.)

SYNPOL® D 9
USER’S MANUAL
On the right side of the control panel, the LE-displays “Frequency” and “Power Factor”
show the actual values of what is being measured. With the keyboard-combination “Shift
1” and “Actual/Percent”, a display value can be changed to a percentage.

2) LED Light Bands

There are two green LED light bands in addition to the seven-segment displays for the
current and the active or true power. These light bands show the appropriate display value
from 1% to 100% and above. If the value exceeds 100%, the amount over 100% will
appear red.

3) LED for the Alarm Status

The LEDs to the right of the LC-display show the alarm status. If a limit value has been
exceeded and causes an alarm, the “Alarm” LED will blink (flash). At the end of the alarm
delay time, the “Alarm” LED will change to a continous light and will remain lit until the
value returns below the limit, the key “Acknowledge” is pressed, or the (entry) “Reset” is
put into operation.

The “Tripped” LED has a function similar to the “Alarm” LED. The difference between the
two is that the “Tripped” LED is an indicator that the generator circuit breaker has been
tripped.

4) LC-Display
The LC-display, located in the center of the Synpol®D control panel, is lit from behind and
serves for programming the Synpol®D device and also for the display of various
information pages, which will be explained in Chapter 1.3.3 “Comprehensive Description
of LC-display Pages”.

1.3.2 Keyboard
The keyboard on the control panel enables the operation of the aggregate, as well as the
programming of the Synpol®D device. In the following description, each key will be
explained. The “Shift 1” key and the “Shift 2” key make multiple use of keys possible. In this
case, the shift keys must be pressed and held until the desired function key is operated.

5) START
Pressing the “Start” key activates the start procedure for the diesel engine. The display
indicates the respective start phases. The “Start” key can be operated at any time, even
while the diesel aggregate is working. If the “Start” key is pressed during a “Stop”
procedure, the stop sequence will be interrupted and the start procedure will begin, jumping
into the point of the start procedure that ends with closing the generator breaker. If there is
a stop because of an alarm, the stopping of the diesel aggregate will not be interrupted by
pressing the “Start” key. Furthermore, the user should not hesitate to press the start button
while the diesel is running because the start value will be energized only if the speed is 0
and the diesel is at a stand still.

6) IMMEDIATE START
By pressing the keys "Shift 1" and "Start", an immediate start is activated. In case a
prelubrication interval has been set, the related delay time will be skipped.

10 SYNPOL® D
USER'S MANUAL
7) STOP
Pressing the “Stop” key stops the diesel engine under normal operating conditions. The
various stop phases, such as “Power switch off” after reducing load and the cooling down
phase of the diesel engine, will be activated.

If the stopping process is activated by mistake or if an automatic stopping order has been
given, the operation can be preserved by pressing the “Start” key. However, the stopping
process cannot be interrupted if a stop has been caused by an alarm.

8) IMMEDIATE STOP
Pushing the keys "Shift 1" and "Stop" activates an immediate stop. The circuit-breaker is
instantly switched off, and the stop magnetic coil is energized. In case a quick-release
cover for immediate stop is connected, it is also triggered. The same stop is brought about
as during an alarm of group 1.

MAN. and AUTOM.

Operation mode can be preset via the keys "Man." (Manual) or "Autom." (Automatic).

9) MAN.
During the operation mode “Manual”, all automatic interventions, such as remote start,
remote stop, load-depending start or "Start-next-Diesel" (used in case of failure of another
Diesel) and start after blackout, are switched off. Operation mode is indicated on the
display. (See Chapter 1.3.3.1.) During the operation mode “Manual”, only a manual start
of the diesel engine by the operation device is possible. In this case, all start procedures
and their correspondent controls run just as during automatic operation. But because
switching of the generator circuit-breaker is not controlled, the operation staff can start
the diesel engine in idle speed. To this end, the switch-on order of the generator circuit-
breaker on the switchboard must be interrupted. However, functions monitoring the diesel
engine, such as those concerning lubricating oil pressure or cooling-water temperature,
etc., can not be switched off or suppressed.

10) AUTOM.
The operation mode “Automatic” activates all external functions, such as remote start,
remote stop, load-depending start or "Start-next-Diesel" (in case of failure of another
diesel engine) and start after blackout. After start procedure, “Automatic” controls the
switching on of the circuit-breaker. Selection of operation mode “Automatic” is only
possible if there is no diesel engine fault and after the input "Automatic ON" has been
connected to Terminal No. 20 (E15 CMA135 Terminal 20). This connection provides that
all other functions on the control panel are switched in a way that the circuit-breaker can
be put on after a start. If the diesel engine is operated by automatic function, the start of
the diesel engine in case of emergency and switching on of the circuit-breaker must be
assured. To this purpose, it is necessary to check that the electric connection to the start
magnetic coil is not interrupted. In case the input "Automatic" is not switched on,
operation mode returns to manual.

11) ACTUAL
By pressing the key "Actual", LE-displays are switched over to values expressed in volt,
ampere and kilowatt. The corresponding dimension is indicated by green LED lamps
beside the seven-segment displays.

SYNPOL® D 11
USER’S MANUAL
12) PERCENT
By pressing the keys "Shift 1" and "Percent", LE-displays for current, voltage and power
will be switched over to values expressed as a percentage. The green LED lamps for
dimension will also go out. In this case, 100% represents the nominal-rated value of the
generator.

13) ACKNOWL.
The key "Acknowl." serves as an acknowledegment and input key. It is used for
acknowledging alarms and for inputting parameter values.

14) PROG.
By pressing the "Prog." key, a jump into the operation mode takes place.

15) RESET
By pressing the keys “Shift 1” and “Reset”, a software set on Synpol®D will be
executed. This should be carried out only at a standstill of the generator!

16) MENU
After the "Menu" key is pressed, menu selection will be indicated on the LC-display. By
pressing the “Menu” key a second time, the “Menu” display will be exited.

17) LIGHT 1 + 2
By pressing the keys "Shift 1" and "Light 1 + 2", the intensity of the background of the
LC-display can be adjusted. Each time the keys are pressed, the following intensity levels
are advanced:

1.) dim; 2.) medium; 3.) bright; 4.) dark; 1.) dim, etc.

By pressing the keys "Shift 2" and "Light 1 + 2", the intensity of the LE-displays can be
adjusted. Each time the keys are pressed, the following four intensity levels are advanced:

1.) dim; 2.) medium; 3.) bright; 4.) very bright ; 1.) dim, etc.

18) ON/OFF, YES/NO

These keys are used for programming. If a question is displayed that is answered by
ON/OFF or Yes/No, each pressing of keys will change the input; for example, from Yes
to No or from ON to OFF and the other way around.

19) SYNCHRON
By pressing the “Shift 1” and “Synchron.” keys, synchronization is switched on. If the
circuit-breaker has been switched on so that synchronization is already in effect, the
indication on the LC-display will disappear after four seconds.

20) LOAD CTRL.

By pressing the key “Load Ctrl”, the status indicator concerning load control and load
balance can be called up. This page makes additional information to the power
management available.

12 SYNPOL® D
USER'S MANUAL

21) SERVICE
By pressing the keys “Shift 1” and “Service”, all analog results of the measurement will
be represented in the LC-display and recorded via CMA 131.

22) DISPLAY
By pressing the “Display” key, the individual LC-display pages can be called up. (See
Chapter 1.3.3) If the “Display” key is not pushed within 30 seconds, the operation page
will be called up the next time the keyboard is pressd.

23) GRAPH
By pushing the keys "Shift 1" and "Graph", graphs are called up one after another on the
LC-display.

24) ALARM
The “Alarm” key is used to call up the actual alarm page.

25) EVENT
By pressing the keys “Shift 1“ and “Event”, the event page, which includes the last 20
events (alarm messages and load requirements), will be shown.

26) ¯ KEYS (Scrolling and Contrast)

The up and down keys are used for cursor movement and scrolling up and down a
parameter in the programming mode. By maintaining pressure on an up or down key, the
scrolling process can be run at high speed. To adjust the contrast of the LC-display, press
the “Shift 1” key first, and then maintain pressure on it it while pushing the up or down
keys. (Up = darker / Down = lighter).

27) SHIFT 1
This key is used for shifting to the second key function. If a key has this second key
function, it is marked at its bottom with the same color as the "Shift 1" key.

28) SHIFT 2
This key is used for shifting to the third key function.

SHIFT 1 + SHIFT 2

2. Power Management
The power management function in Synpol®D controls and coordinates the load sharing on a
busbar from several parallel running diesel aggregates. The Synpol®D can manage a
maximum of four independent networks (0-3) separated by tiebreakers. Each network works
on its own power management control simultaneously with other networks. The power
management contains the load-depending start and stop, as well as the symmetrical load
sharing of the diesel aggregate. This means all aggregates will share their load in such a way
as to have the same percentage of their own nominal-rated power supplied to the same
network.

Besides symmetrical load sharing, Synpol®D can switch to an asymmetrical load-sharing work
mode. In this mode, the user can set the aggregate to a fixed load.

The power management function also contains an automatic frequence regulator. This
regulator can be set to a constant frequency static control. The final mode in the power
management system is the load controller. Depending on the load of a big consumer, the load
controller coordinates the switching on of big consumers by calculating the spare load on the
network, or, if the spare load is insufficient, by starting one or two additional diesel
aggregates.

To activate power management and load sharing, it is necessary to connect all Synpol®D
devices to the CAN bus. This two-wire bus communication is the only connection between
Synpol®D units.

2.1 Load depending starting and stopping of the diesel aggregates

The centerpiece of the power management system is the load-depending start and stop of the
diesel aggregate in island operation. For this function, pressing the “Load Control” key will
call up a display of various status indicators for the most important activities of the complete
power management system. The settings for the load-depending start and stop control are the
Parameters numbered [10 to 87]. Other settings on the display page are the priority settings of
the diesel aggregates. Also, the user can determine if a stop blocking was selected by a
function input.
Power management operation is a software option. To activate this option, a code number
must be set during the programming procedure.

2.2 Symmetrical load sharing

When several diesel generator sets are working parallel on the same busbar, an automatic load
sharing will be activated. The load sharing of each individual diesel aggregate will be
activated in such a way that the relative active power of each generator set will correspond to
the average active power of all running diesel generators. The output of the load-sharing
regulator will go to each speed-setting device of the diesel aggregate. The load-sharing
regulator works as a three-step regulator. The parameter settings are found on [55 to 57]. The
break time is set at Parameter [55]; pulse time at [56], and the dead zone for the regulator is
set at Parameter [57]. To block the load-sharing function, the input “Load Sharing OFF” can
be set on E4 CMA132 Terminal 24. Note that if the load sharing on one Synpol®D is blocked,
then it will also be blocked for all Synpols running on the same network. In case of Synpol®D
communication error (CAN-Bus) the load sharing will be blocked as well.

42 SYNPOL® D
USER’S MANUAL

The load-sharing regulator output is given by signals “speed higher” or “speed lower”. If the
frequency goes below the nominal-rated frequency, then the regulator will stop to give outputs
to lower the speed to prevent an under-frequency tripping caused by the fault of one diesel
speed controller or a fuel-oil blockage.

The following diagram shows the requirements for activating the symmetrical load sharing:

2.3 Asymmetrical load sharing

As well as symmetrical load sharing, Synpol®D offers asymmetrical load sharing. In this mode
the reference value of the load regulator is not the load average of all connected diesel
aggregates, but rather it is a fixed reference that can be set on the menu page via the Synpol®D
monitor system or through the analog input (CMA 137 Terminals 19 and 20). If one generator
is running as a motor, then the input E8 (reverse power off) must be set. The asymmetrical
load reference will set to the reverse value. For this operational mode, the Parameter [59]
(asymmetrical range minimum) must be set to zero. To switch on the asymmetrical load
sharing, the function input must be used. The input numbers must be set in Parameter [58].
All diesels, except one that must remain in symmetrical load sharing, can be switched on to
the asymmetrical load sharing mode.

Synpol®D offers a special mode for the asymmetrical load sharing of one or more diesel
aggregates so that the remaining diesels (one or more) will not run in a lower load as set in
Parameter [590]. This special mode can be set in the Parameters [588 to 591].

2.3.1 Asymmetric Controller

The asymmetric controller is an extension of asymmetrical load sharing by a supervisory

function. In a board net with a shaft generator and auxiliary engines, the asymmetric controller
runs either the shaft generator or the auxiliary engines in asymmetrical load mode. The
asymmetric controller has four different modes:

Mode 1: The shaft generator runs in asymmetrical load-sharing mode with the shaft
generator working as a generator.
Mode 2: The auxiliary engines run in asymmetrical load-sharing mode.
Mode 3: The shaft generator runs in asymmetrical load-sharing mode with the shaft
generator working as a motor (power-take-in).
Mode 4: The auxiliary engines run in asymmetrical load-sharing mode.

When the (Parameter [588] = 1), the asymmetric controller is switched to Modes 1 and 2.
When the (Parameter [588] = 2) the asymmetric controller is switched to Modes 3 and 4. After
the asymmetric controller is turned on via a function input (defined by Parameter [589]), the
controller starts working by setting the shaft generator into asymmetrical load-sharing mode.
The shaft generator will be set to its asymmetrical load-sharing setpoint, which is fixed in the
menu page. If the asymmetric controller is running in Mode 1 and an auxiliary engine falls
below the load limit which is set with Parameter [590], then after the delay time (Parameter
[591]), the asymmetric controller will switch into Mode 2. If Mode 3 is active and an auxiliary
engine exceeds the limit set with Parameter [590], then the asymmetric controller will switch

44 SYNPOL® D
USER’S MANUAL
into Mode 4. The following diagrams shows the mode of operation of the asymmetric
controller. On the left side the controller operates between Modes 1 and 2 (Parameter
[588]=1) and on the right side, between Modes 3 and 4 (Parameter[588]=2).

2.4 Frequency static controller

The frequency static regulator controls the frequency of all diesel aggregates in the network.
The set points of the regulator are the Parameters [65 and 66]. Parameter [65] is the set point
for the idle frequency and Parameter [66] is the set point for the frequency under full load. If a
difference between the reference setting and the actual value appears, then the frequency static
regulator will activate the outputs for the speed setting. The frequency static regulator itself
operates as a three-step controller with the Parameter settings [67 to 69]. If the frequency
static controller has to run separately from the load sharing, the Parameter [579] can be set. To
switch off the frequency static regulator, a function input can be used and the numbers of the
function input can be set in Parameter [64].

2.5 Load Calculator

The load calculator coordinates and controls the start release of big consumers in the same
network. Each Synpol®D can control two big consumers. The requests of big consumers are
given to a function input set in Parameters [88 and 90] and the release is given to a function
output through Parameters [18 and 19]. If a request is set to an input function, then the load
calculator compares the ordered power set in Parameters [89 and 91] to the remaining spare
load of the network. If the required load is less than the remaining spare load, then a release
signal will be given through the output immediately. If the required load is higher than the
remaining spare load on the network, then one, or if necessary, two additional diesel generator
sets will be started. After the diesel generator sets are connected to the network, a release

48 SYNPOL® D

signal will be given through the output. In this case the release signal can be delayed with
Parameter [86].
