Tutorial Sheet 3

The document is a tutorial sheet for the Engineering Mathematics-II course, detailing various problems related to vector spaces, including properties, examples, and subspace conditions. It includes tasks such as proving certain properties of vector spaces, demonstrating specific sets as vector spaces, and evaluating the subspace nature of given sets. The problems cover both theoretical aspects and practical applications within the context of vector spaces over different fields.

Tutorial Sheet-3

1. Let V be a vector space over C. Then show that

(a) 0v = 0 and (−1)v = −v for all v ∈ V.
(b) if a ∈ C, v ∈ V , and av = 0, then a = 0 or v = 0
2. Show that the set {f | f : N → R} of all real-valued functions of natural number is a vector space
under the operations
(f + g)(m) = f (m) + g(m) and (αf )(m) = αf (m)
for all m ∈ N and α ∈ R.

3. Let V = Q[ 2] = {a + b 2 : a, b ∈ Q}. Then show that V is a vector space over Q with the usual
addition of real numbers and scalar multiplication.
4. Let V = R+ , the set of all positive real numbers. Define addition and scalar multiplication on V as
follows. For x, y ∈ V, α ∈ R, define
x + y = xy, αx = xα .
Show that V is a vector space over R.
5. Are the following true or false? Justify your response.
(a) Q is a vector space over R.
(b) R is a vector space over C.
(c) Q is a vector space over Q.
(d) R is a vector space over Q.
(e) C is a vector space over Q.
6. Let V be a vector space over a field F, and let W1 , W2 be two subspaces of V . Then W1 ∪ W2 is a
subspace of V if and only if either W1 ⊆ W2 or W2 ⊆ W1 .
7. Let V be the space of all real-valued functions on [0, 1]. Check whether W is a subspace of V. Justify
your answer.
(a) W = {f ∈ V | f is continuous}
(b) W = {f ∈ V | f is differentiable}.
8. Show that the intersection of two subspaces is a subspace.
9. If V is a vector space over F, and W1 , W2 are two subspaces of V , then
W1 + W2 := {w1 + w2 : w1 ∈ W1 , w2 ∈ W2 }
is a subspace of V , containing W1 and W2 . Moreover, it is the smallest subspace of V containing both
W1 and W2 .

10. Is W = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : y = −4x, z = 5x} a subspace of R3 (R)?
11. Let V = M3 (R) be the vector space of all 3 × 3 matrices over R. Is W = {A ∈ V : det(A) ̸= 0} a
subspace of V ?

12. Let V be the vector space of all real-valued functions on R. If

(a) W1 = {f ∈ V : f is a solution of y ′′ + 3y ′ − 5y = 0}
(b) W2 = {f ∈ V : f is increasing }

then, determine if they are subspaces of V (R)?
