EMPS Exp3

The document outlines an experiment to plot the magnetization characteristics of a separately excited DC generator, detailing the aim, required apparatus, theory, circuit diagram, procedure, and precautions. It explains the relationship between generated EMF and field current, as well as the concepts of critical field resistance and critical speed. The document also includes an observation table for recording data during the experiment.

In a DC generator generated EMF is given by: E = 60A

Where, = Flux/pole in Weber, Z= No. of armature conductors, N= Speed in r.p.m., P =No. of

poles and A= No. of parallel paths.
Atconstant speed, E is proportional to
E=K'O

i.e. E-KB, where B is the flux density (Wb/m) in the air gap.
This flux or flux density is established by the flied MMF of Ir Nwhere, Ir= flied current in

amperes.
Ng= No. of turns of flied windings.

Where, L=mean length of magnetic path/pole for agiven machine I,H &E is directly proportional
to B. Hence the magnetization characteristics B-H curve can be obtained by plotting E Vs lr curve.
The shape of the magnetization curve also called open circuit characteristics (0CC) is shown in
Fig.l. Different curves can be obtained at different speeds.
Critical field resistance: it is that value of field resistance at which the de generator will fail to
excite.
Critical Speed: t is that speed for which the given shunt field resistance becomes the critical field
resistance. Critical tield resistance is obtained by plotting the open circuit characteristic in fig. and
determines the slope of the tangent to the linear position of the curve from the origin. While drawing
the tangent, the initial position of 0CCis neglected from the Fig.1,OX is the tangent

The critical speed, N= (YZXZ) x rated speed.
Rated speed is the speed at which the OCCis obtained.
