Respected teacher and my friends, Assalam o alaykum… Today I’ll briefly explain basic concept of time

and its measurement system. First of all, I’ll start with the definition of time…

What is time?

Time is defined as the duration in which all things happen, or a precise instant that something happens
in an irreversible succession. Time is measured or recorded by using clocks.

We can either use 12-hour clock or 24-hour clock system.

First I’ll explain 12-hour clock.

12 hour clock

A complete day consists of 24 hours. We diverge the 24 hours in a day into two parts

Each period consists of 12 hours.

A new day starts at midnight.

Morning is denoted by a.m. (where a.m. stands for “ante meridiem” which is a Latin word meaning
“before midday”), while the afternoon, evening and night are expressed as p.m. (where p.m. stands for
“post meridiem” which is a Latin word meaning “after midday”). I will explain it on the board to clarify
this concept.

(insert diagram)

24 hour clock

Numbers from 0-23 are used to stand for all the hours in a day.

A new day starts at midnight.

In 24 hour clocks four digits are used to indicate time

We do not use am or pm in a 24 hour clock.

Questions

Q1- Write 6 o clock in the evening using a 12 hour clock and a 24 hour clock.

Q2- A train departs from Peshawar at 1033 and arrives at sukkur at 0232 the next day how much time
did the train take to complete the journey?

Actually the answer is 15 hours and 59 minutes why? Because the 24 hour clock method is being used in
this question. If I had written 1432 instead of 0232 then it would be 3 hours and 59 minutes
