4 (a). A trapezoidal channel with side slope of 2 horizontal to 1 vertical has to be designed to
carry 15 m3/s discharge at a slope of 1 in 5000. Determine the dimension of the
Efficient section. Assume Manning’s constant N = 0.014. [7]

(b). What is uniform flow. How most economical and most efficient channel sections
are related to each other? [7]

5 (a). Write a short note on following:


i. Momentum correction factor (β) [3]
ii. Kinetic energy correction factor (α) [4]

(b). The velocity distribution in rectangular channel of width (B) and depth of flow (y0)
was given by v= k.y1/2 in which k is a constant. Calculate correction factor α & β. [7]

6 (a). Derive the condition for efficient trapezoidal section. Prove that hydraulic radius
(R)=A/P is equal to (y/2). [7]

(b). Find the discharge through a Trapezoidal channel of width 8.0 m and side slope of 1
horizontal to 3 vertical. The depth of water is 2.4 m and value of Chezy’s constant C =
50, the slope of the bed of channel is given 1 in 4000. [7]
7 (a). What is Gradually varied flow. Discuss the various assumption taken in Gradually
varied flow? [7]

(b). A rectangular channel 2.40 m wide carries a uniform flow of water at the rate 7 m 3/s
at the depth of 1.5 m. If there is rise of 15 cm in the bed at downstream, then calculate
the depth at downstream. [7]

8 (a). A hydraulic jump occurring in a rectangular channel having discharge per unit width
is 2.5 m2/s and depth before the jump is 0.25m. Calculate the Sequent depth? [7]

(b). What is surge in open channel flow. Write short notes on positive surge and negative
surge. [7]

9 (a). What is critical flow condition and prove that at critical depth,

[ (Q2. Tc) / (g. Ac 3) = 1] [7]

(b). Prove that for a rectangular section, the specific energy at critical flow condition is 1.5

times the yc. (where, yc is critical depth) [7]
