What is Modulation?
Modulation is a process by which some characteristics (ie. frequency/ phase/
amplitude of a high frequency carrier wave is varied in accordance with a
modulation/ message/ baseband signal.
What is Digital Modulation?
In digital modulation, the message signal is of digital nature (Binary or M-ary
encoded version) and the carrier wave to be modulated is of usually sinusoidal
(analog, ie. having fixed frequency) nature.
In digital modulation, switching/ keying of the amplitude, frequency or phase of
the carrier wave is done.
The three forms of digital modulation techniques that is ASK, FSK and PSK are
analogous to AM, FM and PM of continuous wave modulation respectively.
Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK)
In ASK, the amplitude of the carrier wave is changed (switched) according to the
instantaneous value of the digital input signal (modulating signal). |
Therefore amplitude shift keying is analogous to Amplitude Modulation (analog
modulation).
Here in this image observe that we are going to modulate a
sinusoidal carrier wave (shown in green colour), with the digital
input signal (0 1 1 0 0 1).
This image also shows the ASK waveform (modulated signal).
So now it's time to understand, how this amplitude shift keying
takes place.
In amplitude shift keying, we change the amplitude of this
sinusoidal carrier wave according to the digital input signal which
is acting as modulating signal (message signal) here.
So the basic concept is, we do not transmit the carrier wave
when the digital input signal is '0', and transmit the sinusoidal
carrier as it is, for digital input signal '1'.
Coherent ASK Detector/
Coherent Demodulation of Binary ASK
Demodulation is the process of reconstructing the original signal at the receiver level.
And it is defined as, whatever the modulated signal received from the channel at the
receiver side by implementing the proper demodulated techniques to recover/reproduce
the original input signal at the output stage of the receiver.
Coherent ASK Detection is one
of the way of doing ASK
Demodulation
It is also known as Synchronous
Demodulation
In this way of demodulation process, the carrier signal which we are using at the
receiver stage is in the same phase with the carrier signal which we are using at the
transmitter stage.
It means the carrier signal at transmitter and receiver stages are the same values.
This type of demodulation is called Synchronous ASK Detection or Coherent ASK
Detection.
The system uses a product modulator/ multiplier with two inputs: an ASK modulated
waveform from the channel but here this modulated waveform is effected with
noise signal because it is forwarded from the free space channeland a locally
generated carrier wave.

Then it is forwarded from the sample and hold circuit for converting it into discrete
signal form. Then at each interval, the discrete signal voltage is compared with the
reference voltage (Vref) to reconstruct the original binary signal.
If the integrator output exceeds the threshold, it outputs 1; otherwise, it outputs 0.
Timing synchronization guarantees accurate timing during decision-making
operations in the receiver w.r.t switching b/w 1 & 0 [switching instants] in the
original binary data , crucial for effective demodulation.
