Computer Memory Unit 3 (1)

The document provides an overview of units of storage in computing, including definitions and conversions for bits, nibbles, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes. It also compares various auxiliary storage devices based on size, storage space, speed, and technology. Additionally, it includes exercises for converting between different storage units.

SS 2 Fourth Week, First Term Note

UNITS OF STORAGE.

Bit, Nibble, Byte, Megabyte (MB), Kilobyte (KB), Gigabyte (GB), Terabyte (TB), Word.

1. BIT – Bit or Binary digit is the basic unit of information in the computer. It is
expressed as 0 and 1 in binary notation.
2. NIBBLE- This is a storage unit that is made up of 4 bits. It is equal to half of an
octet. An octet is equal to 8 bits.
3. BYTE- It is equivalent to a single character such as a letter, a numerous or a
punctuation mark. It is equivalent to 2 nibbles or 8 bits (11001101). The of
computer memory is determined by bytes.
4. KILOBYTE-It is used to measure memory space and units.
The hard disks of computers, the memory spaces, flash drives and other
storage media are measured in KBs, MBs and GBs respectively.
8 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 kb

5. MEGABYTE- MB is equal to 1024 × 1024 bytes (1,048,576 bytes)

1024KB = 1MB; 10242 bytes =1 MB.

6. Gigabyte (GB)- GB is equal to 1024 megabytes. The unit symbol for the gigabyte
is GB or G -byte.
1024 megabytes = 1 gigabyte.
10243 bytes = 1 gigabyte

7. TERABYTE- It is equivalent to 1024 GB. This implies that 10244 bytes = 1

Terabyte (1,099,511,627,776 bytes).
