2. How to Set Goals

Most people make the mistake of setting goals like,“I want to learn Thai” or “I want to save money.” In other words,
big, vague goals that tell you nothing about what to do and overwhelm you into quitting. The solution? Set small,
measurable, monthly goals with a deadline. For example:
• Finish 30 ThaiPod101 lessons in 1 month. Deadline: January 31st.
• Learn 100 Thai words. Deadline: January 31st.
• Speak 1 minute of Thai. Deadline: January 31st.

All of these goals are small and measurable, allowing for a greater chance of success. Much easier than “learn Thai
someday.”

3. How to Set Routines

Once you have a goal, it’s time to create a learning routine. If a goal is the destination, the routine is what gets you
there. Here are 2 simple ways to create a routine.

Easy approach for new learners:
Instead of trying to carve out a new routine — which is how many learners fail — start by “piggybacking” on top
of an existing routine. Find a routine where you can multi-task and learn Thai. For example, if you commute to
work or take a daily 15-minute walk, use that time to listen to ThaiPod101 lessons.

Approach for ambitious learners:

Start from your goal. If your goal is to do 30 lessons a month, divide your goal by the days of the week and fit into
your schedule. In this case, that’s about 1 lesson a day. Then, answer the following questions:
• How? (Ex. ThaiPod101 lessons on computer or phone)
• When? (Ex. 8PM every day)
• Where? (Ex. At home on the couch)
• For how long? (Ex. For 15 minutes maximum)

4. Managing Expectations & Progress

Warning, this may be the most important tip of all. Whichever goal and routine you set for yourself, you will run into
hiccups 100% guaranteed. You may miss a day or two or three. You may fall short of reaching your goal. And that’s
normal — life can and will get in the way. Keeping this in mind will help you feel less guilty and allow you to keep on
moving.

• If you fail a goal, aim for a lower goal the next time around.
• If you fail to stick with your routine…
• Reduce the study session duration (for ex. From 20 min to 10 min)
• Try piggybacking instead of creating a new routine

The point is to make the goals and routines easy enough for you to stick with and accomplish.

5. How to Start Speaking

• Shadowing: This is a learning technique where you simply repeat what you hear. If you want to start speaking
from day 1, shadowing is the easiest thing you can do. As you’re taking the lessons in the pathway, repeat the
lines of the dialogue.

6. How to Improve Your Listening

• Exposure to Native Speech: Exposure to native speakers is the best way to train your ear and get used to real
Thai. Just take the ThaiPod101 lessons and listen to the dialogues.
• Use the Line-by-Line Audio Dialogue: If a dialogue is too fast for you, you also get a Line-by-Line breakdown
so you can hear, read, and review each line individually.
• Listen & Read Along: You can also follow along with the Transcript or the Line-by-Line as you listen and never
miss a word.

7. How to Make Sure You’re Learning & Improving

• Take the Assessments: After every few lessons, you’ll get tested on what you’ve learned with Multiple-Choice
and Hand-graded Assessments. As a result, you’ll remember what you’ve learned better because it is the act of
remembering that makes your brain stronger — also known as Active Recall, a scientifically proven method.

To your fluency,
Peter and Kyejin
