COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEM (CEP)

Course Title Ch.E-301: Chemical Reaction Engineering

Instructor Dr. Ch Haider Ali Semester (Session) Fall 2023 (2021)
Submission Deadline 23.11.2023 Total Marks 10
CLO Statement Level PLO
CLO-2: Determine the reaction kinetics and basic reactor design
parameters for their practical application. C3 PLO-2

PROBLEM ATTRIBUTES:
Solving this problem requires:
1. In-depth Reaction Engineering Knowledge
- In-depth knowledge of reaction kinetics and chemical reactor
2. Depth of analysis
- Exposure of basic design of chemical reactors, sizing, and optimum configuration
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Chemical reactors are the heart of chemical process. The performance of chemical reactor can make or
break the process. There are multiple types of chemical reactors utilized in industry. Following are some
industrial processes where chemical reactors are required, students need to go through whole process and
suggest which is suitable for their assigned chemical process:

Production of Isopropyl acetate Production of Maleic Anhydride

Production of Biodiesel by enzymatic Production of Hydrogen gas by biomass

reaction gasification

Production of ammonia by steam reforming Production of Salicylic acid

Production of Poly Styrene Production of Ethyl Benzene

Production of Sulphuric acid Production of Caustic Soda

The main objectives of this CEP were:

➢ Explain the process in general i.e production route, reactions involved, applications.
➢ Find the chemical rection of their assigned chemical process with the kinetics and conditions
(Phase, temperature, pressure, catalyst involved, order of reaction) under which reaction is
performed.
➢ Choose the optimum reactor for this reaction among Batch reactor, plug flow reactor (PFR),
Continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR), packed bed reactors (PBR), etc.

Good luck
➢ Calculate the volume of the final selected reactor.

Good luck
