Assignment 1 AD-II SP25

The assignment for AR 161 Architectural Design II at BIT Mesra focuses on anthropometrics and ergonomics in space design, requiring students to study human measurements and furniture dimensions. It consists of four steps: creating detailed drawings of their residence, conducting an ergonomic study of a designated activity space, measuring human postures and furniture, and redesigning the studied space based on observations. Submissions must include a minimum of five A3 sheets and adhere to strict deadlines, with penalties for late submissions.

Assignment 1: Anthropometrics and Ergonomics Study & Design of a Typical Space

The main aim of the following exercise is to develop the skill of study of human measurements and
its applicability in furniture and space design.

Firstly, this will be a learning experience for compilation of data procured through measurement
(various postures of Human body).

Secondly, this is also a learning experience to collect data procured through measurement of the
inanimate objects around (Furniture/ built structure).

Finally, it will enhance the skill to identify the design requirements as per space-use considerations.

Depending on the number of users, type of activity, and built-space, the measurements can be
determined. In this exercise, the students first study human measurements in various postures and
then for a particular activity space, the various furniture and their suitable dimensions. Then from the
observed data, they are required to re-design the typical area under their study.

The exercise is divided into four parts:

Step A

• Do a comprehensive measured drawing of your residence. Do collect dimensions of the

furniture/s in all the rooms, not forget the utility areas, the staircase, portico, verandah, balconies,
garage, landscaping, the entire site, etc.
• You are required to draw the detailed scaled floor plan/plans, wall elevations, and furniture details.

Step B

• Each one gets an assigned typical activity space to do the study (eg; living room, kitchen etc)
• Depending on the area under the study, identify an exhaustive list of different furniture
required. The Ergonomic study is done.
• Depending on this study, an exhaustive list of human postures is identified.

Step C

• Take the dimensions of both human –posture and furniture from the standards.
• Take the dimensions of both human –posture and furniture by actual measurement.

Step D
• Draw to a suitable scale the site plan, floor plan/s, elevations and sectional elevations as measured
in Step A.
• Make study sheets based on all the aspects of Step B.
• Make a comparative analysis chart using the data as observed in step C.
• The study sheet will have standard dimensions, measured dimension and inference along with
the drawing of furniture and human posture.
• Finally, each one will prepare a redesign of the typical space that they have studied based on
their observation and inferences.

Submissions: -

1. Number of sheets- flexible (minimum 5 A3 sheets).

2. Date of introduction: 19.12.24

3. Submission date - 28.01.25

• Submissions dates will be strictly maintained.

• Late submissions will get (-2), per day.
• The study must be done individually so in case of wanted and unwanted coincidences of
• exact study, both submissions will be rejected.
• Unnecessary calls will not be entertained. However, if required for any discussion, then teachers may be contacted
through WhatsApp group.
