1. Abacus: Abacus was the first device known for counting. Invented in China in the
16th century, Abacus was made up of a rectangular wooden frame with
vertical wires and colourful beads on each wire.
2. Napier Bones: Invented by John Napier in 1617, Napier Bones had vertical rods with
digits printed on the rods.
3. Pascaline: Designed by Blaise Pascal between 1642 and 1644, Pascaline consisted of a
rectangular box having wheels. The wheels had to be rotated for performing
the calculations in it.
4. Mark I: Developed by Howard Aiken in 1944, Mark I used punched cards to store the
information. The machine was bulky in its size of more than 50 feet long, feet
high and about 5 tons in weight.

Ans. A computer has following characteristics:
(i) Speed – does every work within a few nanoseconds, or even a few picoseconds
(ii) Reliability – restores data in case of any computer failure.

(iv) Storage capacity – stores large amount of data that can be accessible at any time.
2. How are computer advantageous for us? (3)
Ans. Computers are advantageous for us in the following ways:
(i) It saves time and perform calculations quickly and accurately.
(ii) It saves a lot of manual work
(iii) It stores a large amount of data and gets error-free work.
3. What are the limitations of a computer? (3)
Ans. A computer has the following limitations:
(i) Computers cannot perform any task unless programmed with instructions.
(ii) Computers cannot take decisions as they don’t have intelligence, wisdom, etc.
(iii) Computers are dependent on electricity which increases the cost.
4. First-generation computers had punched cards. What was the use of these cards? (2)
Ans. In the first-generation computers, punched cards were used as input device to feed data
into the computers. They performed computation in milliseconds.
5. Mention any four features of fourth-generation computers. (2)
Ans. Four features of fourth-generation computers are –
(i) The fourth-generation computers have microprocessor-based systems.
(ii) The fourth-generation computers use VLSI circuits.
(iii) Improved speed, accuracy and reliability are seen.
(iv) Refinement of the input/output devices seen.
6. In which way are fourth-generation computers better than third-generation computers? (2)
Ans. Fourth generation computers are faster, more reliable, and have more memory than
third generation computers. Fourth generation computers also use less electricity
and are more portable and compact.
7. List some areas where supercomputers are used. (2)
Ans. Supercomputers are used in areas like weather forecasting, defence, space research and
aircraft designing.
