Experiment Title: Test of Helical Spring

1.1 Objective of the Experiment

i. To find the stiffness (k) of the spring.

ii. To compare theoretical stiffness with observed stiffness.
iii. To find out max shear stress and max torque.

1.2 Significance
This experiment will provide fundamental knowledge on behaviour of helical spring, test
procedure, universal testing machine and its working principal, type of spring tested etc.

1.3 Apparatus
1.3.1 Helical Spring Testing Machine

1.4 Specimen
1.4.1 Closely coiled helical spring

1.5 Brief Procedure

i. Measure the diameter of the spring wire at several locations to find the mean diameter.
ii. Record the number of turns of the spring as N.
iii. Measure the outer and inner diameter of the helical spring and hence find the mean radius
of the spring.
iv. Place the spring between the table and the comparison block of the testing machine.
v. Apply load and record the digital reading for deflection.
vi. Repeat the whole process for decreasing load.
1.6 Sample Calculation
1.7 Result

1.8 Discussion
