a cantilever. A transverse point load of 2650N is acting downward at the free
end of the member together with a torque of 240 Nm. Find the maximum
principal stress, minimum principal stress and maximum shear stress at the most
critical section of the member.
2 A machine member 100mm diameter and 300mm long can be treated as a
cantilever for stress analysis. The member is subjected to a combination of the
following loads (i) a axial tensile load of 20kN (ii) a transverse point load of
6kN at the free end (iii) a torque of 5kNm at the free end. Determine the
combined stresses at the most critical sections.
3 A solid circular shaft 15mm diameter is subjected to fluctuating stress that

shaft is 200 MPa. Find factor of safety using (i) Gerber line (ii) Soderberg line
(iii) Goodman line.
4 A machine component is subjected to fluctuating stress that varies from 20 MPa
to 100 MPa. The corrected endurance limit stress for the machine component is
270 MPa. The ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the material is 600
MPa and 450 MPa. Find factor of safety using (i) Gerber theory (ii) Soderberg
line (iii) Goodman line
5 A rod of circular cross section is subjected to an alternating tensile force,
varying from 20kN to 70kN. Determine the diameter of the rod according to (i)
Gerber method (ii) Goodman method (iii) Soderberg method; using the
following material properties: Ultimate tensile strength = 1000 MPa, Yield
Strength= 550MPa.
6 A cantilever rod of circular section is subjected to a cyclic transverse load;
varying from −100 N to +300N. Determine the diameter of the rod by (i)
Goodman method (ii) Soderberg method using the following: factor of safety is
2, theoretical stress concentration factor = 1.4, Notch sensitivity factor =0.9,
Ultimate Strength = 550 MPa, Yield strength = 320 MPa, Endurance limit = 275
MPa, Size correction factor = 0.85, Surface correction factor = 0.9.
7 The following are the material properties of a connecting link made of mild steel
of σ ut =600 MPa∧σ y =350 MPa and σ e =200 MPa. Find factor of safety for
the following stresses

(i) A bending stress varying between 40 MPa and 100MPa


(ii) A direct compressive stress varying between 0 and 100 MPa
8 A simply supported shaft 50mm diameter and 0.5m long is subjected to load at
its mid-section, a load that varies cylindrically from 2P to 4P. Determine the
value of P from the following : yield strength is 400MPa, endurance limit is 350
MPa, factor of safety is 2, Size correction factor = 0.85, Surface correction
factor = 0.9.
9 The work cycle of a mechanical component subjected to a completely reversed
bending stresses consists of the following three elements: (i) ± 300N/mm2 for
85% of the time (ii) ± 450 N/mm2 for 12% of the time (iii) ± 450N/mm2 for 3%
of the time. The material for the component is 50C4 ( σ ut =650 MPa ¿ and the
corrected endurance limit of the component is 280 N/mm 2. Determine the life of
the component.
10 A machine component is subjected to a reversed bending stress of 700 MPa for
15% of the time, 560MPa for 20% of the time and a reversed bending stress of
430MPa for 65% of the time. Determine the expected life of the part. The
endurance strength of the component material for various stress levels are as
follows 700 MPa for 10,000 cycles, 360MPa for 40000 cycles and 450 MPa for
200000 cycles.
11 A leather belt of cross section 100 × 10 mm 2 is transmitting power at a speed of
18m/s. The ratio of tension at tight side and slack side is 2.7. The shaft
permissible stress is 1.6 N/mm2. Calculate the power transmitting capacity of the
belt by considering the centrifugal force. Also find the maximum power
transmission capacity and maximum speed at the condition of maximum power
capacity.
12 A V belt drive consists of 2 belts in parallel on grooved pulleys of the same size.
The angle of the groove is 40 0. The cross sectional area of each belt is 750mm 2
and coefficient of friction is 0.25. The density of belt material is 1100 kg/m 3 and
maximum safe stress in the material is 8 MPa. Calculate the power that can be
transmitted between pulleys of 300mm diameter rotating at 1600 rpm. Find also
the shaft speed at which power transmitted is maximum.
13 Design a belt drive to transmit 110 kW for a system consisting of 2 pulleys of
diameter 0.9m and 1.2m, centre distance of 3.6m. A belt speed of 20 m/s,
coefficient of friction 0.3, a slip of 1.2% at each pulley and 5% friction loss at
each shaft and 20% overload.
Design a flat belt drive for a compressor running at 720 rpm, which is driven by a
25kW, 1440 rpm motor. Space is available for a centre distance of 3m. The belt is open
type.
14 A leather belt drive of open type is to transmit 15 kW. The centre distance
between the pulleys is twice the diameter of the larger pulley. The belt should
operate at a velocity of 20m/s and the stress in the belt should not exceed 2.25
MPa. The density of the leather belt is 0.95 gm/cc and the coefficient of friction
is 0.35. The thickness of the belt is 5mm. Calculate (i) diameter of the pulleys
(ii) the length and width of the belt. (iii) belt tensions.
15 Two parallel shafts whose centre distance is 4.8m apart are connected by a cross
belt drive. The diameter of larger pulley is 1.5 m and that of smaller pulley is
1.05m. The initial tension when the belt is stationary is 3 kN. The weight of belt
is 15 N/m. The coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.3. Taking
centrifugal tension on account, find the power transmission capacity for the
drive when the speed of smaller pulley is 400 rpm.
16 The following data is given for an open belt drive. Diameter of the driving
pulley = 150mm, diameter of the driven pulley = 300mm, centre distance = 1m,
groove angle = 400, mass of the belt = 0.25 kg/m , maximum permissible tension
= 750 N, coefficient of friction = 0.2. Calculate the maximum power that can be
transmitted by the belt and the corresponding belt velocity.
17 The following data relates to a screw jack: Load = 25 kN, Nominal diameter of
the screw = 30mm, Pitch of the screw = 5mm. Coefficient of friction between
the screw and nut = 0.15. Assume that the load rotates with the screw,
determine

(i) The torque required to raise the load and the torque required to
lower the load
(ii) The efficiency of the screw jack.
1. Design a screw jack for lifting a load of 20kN through a height of
100mm. Draw a sketch of the screw jack.

18 A load of 12kN is raised by a screw with single start square threads of 50mm
mean diameter and 12mm pitch. The screw is operated by a hand wheel, the
boss of which is threaded to act as a nut. The load is resisted by a thrust collar,
which supports wheel boss, and has a mean radius of 30mm. The coefficient of
friction of 0.15 for the screw and 0.18 for the collar. If the tangential force
applied by each hand on the wheel is 120N. Determine the diameter of the hand
wheel required.
19 A bronze spur pinion rotating at 500 rpm drives a cast iron spur gear at a
transmission ratio of 4:1. The allowable static stress for the bronze pinion and
cast iron gear are 85 N/mm2 and 100 N/mm2 respectively. The pinion has 16
standards 200 full depth involute teeth of module 8 mm. The face width of both
the gears is 90mm. Find the power that can be transmitted from the stand point
of strength.
20 A pair of spur gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with a 120 teeth gear.
The module is 4mm. Calculate (i) the centre distance (ii) The pitch circle
diameters of the pinion and the gear (iii) the addendum and dedendum (iv) the
tooth thickness (v) the bottom clearance (vi) the gear ratio.
21 20 kW power need to transmit form the shaft to another by means of a gear
drive. The maximum permissible limit between the centre distance of gear is
250mm. Design the gear taking shaft speed at 1440 rpm and speed ratio is 4:1
22 A pair of helical gears is to transmit 15 kW. The teeth are 20 0 stub in diametral
plane and have a helix angle of 45 0. The pinion runs at 10000 rpm and has
80mm pitch diameter. The gear has a pitch diameter of 320mm. If gears are
made of cast steel having allowable static strength of 100 MPa. Determine
module and face width from static strength considerations and check the gears
for wear, given σ es=618 MPa , E = 2.1 ×10 5 MPa.
23 Determine the dimensions of cross section of the connecting rod for a diesel
engine with the following data:

24 Design a connecting rod for a IC engine using the following data:
Diameter of piston = 140mm
stroke = 160mm
mass of reciprocating parts = 3kg
Length of connecting rod = 400mm
maximum speed = 2000 rpm
maximum explosion pressure = 2.25 MPa.
25 Design a center crankshaft for a single cylinder vertical engine using the
following data:

Cylinder bore = 125mm, l/r ratio =4.5, maximum gas pressure = 2.5 MPa, stroke
length = 150 mm, width of flywheel cum belt pulley = 1 kN, Total belt pull = 2
kN, Width of hub for flywheel cum belt pulley = 200mm, allowable bending
stress = 75 MPa, bearing pressure = 10 MPa. The torque on the crankshaft is
maximum when the crank turns through 250 from the top dead centre and at the
position, the gas pressure inside the cylinder is on the piston is 2 MPa. The belts
are in horizontal direction.
