ENGINEERING Design
Expt. No. 4
Date: Design an AC winding with a design report using Auto-Cad
Purpose:
• The purpose of designing an AC winding is to provide students with a hands-
on understanding of the construction and operational principles of AC
machines, specifically focusing on the armature winding configuration. This
experiment aims to enhance the practical knowledge of electrical engineering
students by allowing them to design, analyze AC winding patterns using
AutoCAD software.
• By doing so, students will gain insights into the advantages of AC winding in
terms of improved commutation, better efficiency, and reduced losses in AC
machines. This experiment bridges theoretical concepts with practical
application, fostering a deeper comprehension of electromagnetic principles
and winding techniques essential for the development of efficient electrical
machines.
Objectives:
Introduction:
Ac winding are generally of a 3-phase kind because of the inherent advantages of a 3-phase
machine. The armature coils must be connected to yield balanced (equal in magnitude and
successive phase difference of 2π/3 rad) 3-phase emfs.
AC winding design
The windings used in rotating electrical machines can be classified as
Concentrated Windings
All the winding turns are wound together in series to form one multi-turn coil
All the turns have the same magnetic axis
Examples of concentrated winding are – field windings for salient-pole synchronous
machines – D.C. machines – Primary and secondary windings of a transformer to
Distributed Windings
All the winding turns are arranged in several full-pitch or fractional-pitch coils
These coils are then housed in the slots spread around the air-gap periphery to form
phase or commutator winding
Examples of distributed winding are – Stator and rotor of induction machines – The
armatures of both synchronous and D.C. machines Armature windings, in general, are
classified under two main heads, namely, Closed Windings
There is a closed path in the sense that if one starts from any point on the winding and
traverses it, one again reaches the starting point from where one had started
Used only for D.C. machines and A.C. commutator machines to Open Windings
Open windings terminate at suitable number of slip-rings or terminals
Used only for A.C. machines, like synchronous machines, induction machines, etc
Pole Pitch: It is centre to centre distance between the two adjacent poles.
Sots per pole per phase: It refers to the number of slots existing in each pole and
each phase.
Slot Angle: It is always calculated in terms of pole pitch and is in electrical degrees.
Coil Pitch: This is defined as the distance between two active sides of a coil in terms
