Indicating and Recording --- DFDAU --- To Re --- enable Digital Flight
Data Acquisition Unit Failure Light and DFDAU Accelerometer
Power Supply Interface --- Modification 8/1616
This page transmits Revision ‘B’ of Service Bulletin 8 --- 31 --- 09 dated 22
Dec 2003.
The Compliance on the previous issue of this service bulletin is not affected
by this revision. Additional rework to the aircraft may be needed if nuisance
FDR caution lights persist.
Remove Service Bulletin 8 --- 31 --- 09 Revision ‘A’ dated 18 Nov 94 and
replace with attached.
SUBJECT: Indicating and Recording --- DFDAU --- to Re---enable Digital Flight
Data Acquisition Unit Failure Light and DFDAU Accelerometer
Power Supply Interface --- Modification 8/1616
I. PLANNING INFORMATION
A. Effectivity
1. Aircraft Affected
DHC---8 Models 102, 103 and 106 Serial Numbers 3 thru 99 with service
bulletin 8---31---2 (Modification 8/0599) incorporated.
DHC---8 Models 102, 103 and 106 Serial Numbers 101 thru 297.
DHC---8 Models 301, 311 and 314 Serial Numbers 100 thru 296.
2. Spares Affected
None
B. Reason
The original DFDAU/DFDR installation caused the Digital Flight Data Recorder
(DFDR) caution panel light to illuminate only for a DFDR failure. Modification
8/0599, incorporated at serial numbers 100 and subsequent, introduced a relay
and wiring changes to enable the DFDR caution light for either a DFDAU or DFDR
failure. However, as a result of a software glitch in the DFDAU, this modification did
not function as intended and was disabled.
Modification 8/1097 introduced a software change into the DFDAU to allow the
re---activation of Modification 8/0599.
Modification 8/1616 re---enables the intent of Modification 8/599 for those aircraft so
provisioned, (refer to EFFECTIVITY) and also restores the original wiring
configuration for Tri---axial accelerometer excitation through the retermination of
two wires, originally relocated due to the incorporation of Modification 8/1576
addition of FDR parameter longitudinal acceleration.
C. Description
The forward panel is removed from the wardrobe to access No. 1 Relay Panel and
the avionics terminal block panel and shelves. Wires are reterminated depending
upon 8/0599 modification status, a simple operational test is carried out and the
wardrobe panel is reinstalled.
D. Compliance
Modification 8/1616 may be accomplished at the operator’s discretion.
Modification 8/1097, Service Bulletin 8---31---08, is a pre---requisite for this
modification.
E. Approval
The design content conveyed by this modification has been approved by the
Design Approval Designee for Transport Canada at Bombardier Inc.
F. Manpower
Approximately 2 man---hours will be required to accomplish this modification.
L. References
Revision ‘B’ of this service bulletin was prepared to Drawing 8DK1616 Rev.B.
The following material is required for the completion of this service bulletin and
may be procured as single items from de Havilland Inc. or purchased directly
from industry sources. Addresses of manufacturers and suppliers not shown
below are listed in either Maintenance Manual Chapter 20 or Structural Repair
Manual Chapter 51.
1. Remove avionics panel and check that Modification 8/1097, Service Bulletin
8---31---8 is accomplished and part number of Flight Data Acquisition Unit (FDAU)
is 2228150---1---A.
2. Either pull and clip circuit breakers required to isolate affected circuits or placard
and select aircraft electrical power to OFF. Obey all relevant WARNINGS and
CAUTIONS detailed in Maintenance Manual PSM 1---8---2 Chapters 12 and 24 or
PSM 1---83---2 Chapters 12 and 24.
3. Remove forward panel from wardrobe for access to No. 1 Relay Panel and to
avionics terminal blocks and shelves
4. Refer to Figure 1, SECTION ONE and ensure all wires are Post---Modification
8/0599, Service Bulletin 8---31---02.
5. Aircraft serial numbers 121, 125, 197 and 218 complete the following ,
(a) Refer to Figure 1, SECTION TWO, DETAIL “C” and reterminate wire coded
3133---48A22 from ground stud 2350---GS6 pin C to terminal block
3133---TB1 pin 2G.
(b) Go to paragraph 7.
6. All other aircraft excluding 121, 125, 197 and 218, Refer to Figure 1, SECTION
TWO, DETAIL “A” and reterminate wire coded 3133---48A22 from ground stud
2350---GS6 pin D to terminal block 3133---TB1 pin 2G.
7. Refer to Figure 1, SECTION TWO, DETAIL ”B” and ensure that diode suppression
module MWSD20E---1 is installed.
8. Refer to Figure 2, DETAIL ”C”. Remove and discard wires and splices from
connector 3133---P1 pins 102 and 105.
9. Cut each of four wires shown at splice M81824/1---1 and install 1 new contact pin
M39029/11---144 onto end of each wire.
11. Apply electrical power to aircraft systems and carry out operational test of
affected circuits as follows:
(a) Make sure automatic flight control system interface unit, proximity
switch electronic unit, digital flight data recorder and digital flight data
acquisition unit are installed, connected and functional.
(b) Make sure circuit breakers FDAU and FDR STAT (locations G2 and H2
respectively on left essential 28 VAC circuit breaker panel) and circuit
breaker FDR (location A9 on 115 VAC avionics breaker panel, left bus) are
engaged.
(c) Make sure caution light FDR is lit (on master caution panel).
(d) Depress GND TEST switch on FLIGHT DATA RECORDER panel (overhead
panel). Caution light FDR shall extinguish.
(e) While depressing GND TEST switch, pull circuit breaker FDAU (location G2
on left essential 28 VAC breaker panel). Caution light FDR shall illuminate.
(f) While still depressing GND TEST FDR switch, re --- engage circuit
breaker FDAU location G2. Caution light FDR shall extinguish.
(g) Depress GND TEST switch and pull circuit breaker FDR (location A9 on
115 VAC avionics breaker panel, left bus). Caution light shall illuminate.
Re---engage breaker, caution light shall extinguish. (Caution light may flash
on and off momentarily before extinguishing).
13. On completion of this modification, make the following entry in the appropriate
logbooks: “Service Bulletin 8---31---09 --- Indicating and Recording --- DFDAU --- to
Re---enable Digital Flight Data Acquisition Unit Failure Light and DFDAU
Accelerometer Power Supply Interface --- Modification 8/1616 accomplished.”
