The novel's main characters stand for the same ideals, that is, a noble struggle against Hemingway's novel is based on real events and it also draws heavily on his own life. He had experience of fishing in the Cuban waters and like the old man he was also a fan of baseball He worked for the Red Cross during the First World War and was injured by shrapnel when he Was in Italy. Hemingway always talks about the need to struggle against defeat or death and how determination and endurance can help one to win in this struggle. The old man is at the end of the novel very near death, but we know that the story of his suffering and loss will live on in the memories of the people of his village. Ultimately his story becomes one of triumph because the tales of his life will live on even after his death. The novel was published in 1952, Q3 (62) (83) (64) ii, (BS) (A) (al SSC 54 Question Papers and Activity Shee when people were trying to recover from the mass destruction wrought by the two world wars, and this tale of endurance and ultimate triumph immediately struck a chord with the readers, : Writing Style: Hemingway's language is simple and pithy. He mostly writes in short and straight-forward sentences and practises an extreme economy in his use of words. This simplicity is deceptive and a reader can read his work again and again and find new layers of meaning every time. My Thoughts: | first read this novel years ago, when I did not understand it at all and was left ‘unimpressed, In spite of this a vivid image remained with me ~ an old man holding on to his fishing line with the last of his strength. Recently I read this book again and was extremely moved. The formidable strength of the old man’s character, the quiet devotion of the empathetic Manolin and the relationship between the two are heartwarming. Hemingway’s descriptions of the sea and the creatures of the water are beautiful. The marlin fights for its life desperately and it’s hard to know whether our sympathies should lie with the old man or with the marlin, But as the novel progresses the old man and the are inseparably linked because both stand for the same ideals, that is, a noble struggle against destruction. List the similarities in the character of Hemingway and the old man in the novel. It is a small wonder, for a dog is a very faithful friend, and anything more delightful than a tiny, fluffy kitten, full of fun and spirits, it would be hard to find. But sometimes these pets do not have a very easy time of it. Only a few days ago, we sav’ a litle boy out on the sidewalk with his kitten, He was enjoying himself, but the kitten wasn’t, for he would pick it up and throw it across the yard, tll the poor kitten mewed pitifully. Now, if we are going to have pets, we ought to leam to treat them well, ust as we would wish to be treated ourselves. We may think, perhaps, that our dog belongs to us, and for that reason we can do with him just as we please. But do we ever stop to consider that the pets may not enjoy being kicked and beaten and pulled about any more than we would if we were in their place? ‘That is something we must think about T SSC 54 Question Papers and Activity Shee We might have been born helpless, in the power of other and larger creatures. But it has pleased our Father to make us what we are, and to give us the power over his other creatures, and for that reason we should be very kind and gentle with them. He wishes us to be merciful, and so we have his promise that those who are merciful shall have mercy shown on them, if ever they come to be in need of it. And then, that it may be very plain to us, he tells us that “the merciful man is merciful to his beast.” This means that man is kind and gentle to all the creatures that he has anything to do with — to his horse and his cow, to his dog, and even to the tiny kitten that ties itself up into a ball, chasing its own tail, Isn't this promise worth trying for? Before superhero blockbusters and animated comedies, filmmakers were lucky if they could get a horse to successfully gallop across the screen. Edward Muybridge invented one of the first movie projectors, the zooptaxiscope. The zoopraxiscope rotated images on a disc very quickly so that figures appeared to be moving, Muybridge’s most famous zoopraxiscope film, featured a horse running in one direction. Soon, movies were everywhere, Filmmakers had not figured out how to add sound yet, but their silent movies were big hits with the public. Audience members often enjoyed live musical accompaniment or commentary from film hosts. The popularity of movies prompted some big changes from even more inventors and filmmakers. Humorous Phases of Funny Faces (1906) was a short film that featured several chalkboard characters coming to life. By 1923, movie makers figured out how to add sound to films. In less than a decade, almost every film produced was a “talkie”. Filmmakers still had ‘one more hurdle to jump in their quest to make movies move closer to reality: most movies were still completely filmed in black-and-white. While early experiments with colour and film had existed since the late 19th century, it was not until Metto-Goldwyn-Mayer’s The Wizard of Oz that colour motion pictures became wildly popular that colour film was taken seriously. Today, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and online streaming allow the movie experience to be enjoyed from the comforts of bedrooms, offices, and even airplanes.
