2. The table below shows the masses of bolts bought by a carpenter.

Find:

5. The price index of an article in 2000 based on 1998 was 130. The price index

ii) Find the range within which the area of the rectangle lies.

9. a) A box contains two types of balls, red and black. When a ball is picked

b) An interview involves written, oral and practical tests. The probability


that an interviewee passes the written test is 0.8, the oral test is 0.6
and the practical test is 0.7. what is the probability the interviewee will
pass;
i) the entire interview.
ii) exactly two of the interview tests. (6 marks)

10. a) Show that there is only one positive real root of the equation
𝑒 𝑥 − 2𝑥 − 1 = 0, between 1 and 2. (5 marks)
b) Use the Newton Raphson Method to calculate the root of the equation
in (a) (i) above, correct to 2 decimal places. (7 marks)

11. Blocks A and B of masses 2kg and 3kg respectively are connected by a
light inextensible string passing over a smooth pulley as shown below.

Block A is resting on a rough plane inclined at 300 to the horizontal


While block B hangs freely. When the system is released from rest
Block B travels a distance of 0.25m before it attains a speed of

i) Acceleration of the blocks.
ii) Coefficient of friction between the plane and block A.

12. The time taken by a group of students to solve a mathematical


problem are given below.

13. The table below the percentage of sand 𝑦, in the soil at different depths
𝑥 (𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑚).

a) i) Plot a scatter diagram for the data and comment on the relationship
between the depth of soil and the percentage of sand in the soil.
ii) Draw a line of best fit. Use your result to estimate the:
 percentage of the sand in the soil at a depth of 31cm.
 depth of soil with 54% of sand.
b) Calculate the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of the data and
comment on your result. (12 marks)

14. In a test there are 10 multiple choice questions. Each question has
𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒓 possible alternatives out of which one is correct. If a student guesses each
of the answers, Find;
(i) The probability that at least four questions are correct.
(ii) Probability that exactly half of the questions are correct.
(iii) Probability of failing all the questions
(iv) Probability that between 2 and 7 questions are correct.
(v) Expected number of correct answers, most likely number of correct answers
and variance. (12 marks)

15. Two vertical towers stand on a horizonal ground level and are 30m and 40
m. A ball is thrown horizontally from the top of the higher tower with a speed
of 24.5𝑚𝑠 −1 and it just clears the shorter tower. Find the distance:
(a) between the two towers
(b) between the shorter tower and the point on the ground where the ball first
lands. (12 marks)
