Project Time Management
Planning Phase
During the planning phase the structure of the project program is prepared with all the
activities scheduled in order. This project document is signed off by all the responsible parties
and will become part of the project documentation.
Execution Phase
The project program is a live document during the execution of the project, activities will never
start or end exactly as planned, so the program is updated with approval of all relevant
members. The purpose of the program during the execution phase is to identify time related
challenges and preparing action points to deal with the changes.
Closeout Phase
After the completion of the execution phase, we closeout the project by analyzing the project and
project documentation to identify challenges and improve future projects. The project program is
one of the management tools looked at to improve time related issues for future projects.

Critical Path Method
Introduction
The critical path method is used to determine the duration of the project. A network of activities
is sorted to create a path that will determine the sequence the activities will be completed.
The critical path is the path in these activities that will determine the earliest time to complete
the project with the least amount of lag time between activities.
Method
Early Start: Determine the earliest time this activity can start
Duration: What is the duration of this activity
Early Finish: Calculate the earliest time to finish this activity
Late Start: Determine the latest time this activity can start
Late Finish: Calculate the latest time this activity can finish
Float: The amount of time you can delay a activity without impact

Example
The critical path method below indicates the 2 activities at the top with float, these activities are
not on the critical path because they have float and none of the other activities are dependent on
them.
The 4 activities in the bottom part are dependent on each other and the activities have the least
amount of float.

Gantt Chart
Introduction
The Gantt chart provides a standard visual display of the project schedule by listing the WBS
items, activity descriptions, start dates, finish dates, duration and progress.
Method
The work breakdown structure item numbers are listed in order in the first column.
Short task names are entered in the second column.
The duration of each activity will follow the task name.
Give each activity a start date including the predecessors.
The finish date will be the duration plus the start date including float when necessary.
