Course Code of Conduct

COMMS 100 Intro to Human Communication

Fall 2023
Rationale:
One of our goals for students is professionalism.

This goal is not something that automatically occurs as you graduate. It occurs over time in
the habits you develop in and out of class. To encourage the right professional habits in
Communication Studies, we have developed a course code of conduct. The purpose of this
code is to help each of you develop important professional habits of accountability and
credibility.

Please read this information thoroughly, and sign to indicate you are aware of the
expectations and guidelines for being in this class. Upload your signed form to Blackboard.
Your return “upload” serves as your “signature.” If you would like clarity on any of the
information contained within, please communicate with me before the due date to upload
this form.

1. Always attend class unless true emergency, illness, or school-sponsored event.

Communicate the reason for your absence and your documentation with the
instructor.
2. More than one absence in a row will require some form of documentation to be
excused. (Can you miss three days of work because you don’t feel well?)
3. Late assignments will receive partial or no credit. Assignments received within a
week of the due date will receive ½ credit. After that, assignments will receive no
credit. Assignment due dates and times are noted in Blackboard.
4. All assignments must be uploaded to Blackboard to receive credit.
5. In-class activities (noted as ICA in Blackboard) cannot be made up if you miss class.
The only exception is for an excused and documented absence which must be
approved with the instructor.
6. If you decide to ask for an exception to the assignment and class activities rule, keep
in mind your peers who posted the assignment on time and came to class and
participated. Ask yourself what is fair. Make sure you have an exceptional reason.
7. Email correspondence with your instructor should follow the rules of professionalism:
a. Include a subject that notes the class you are referring to and a brief
description (for example, BUS 306 Presentation Assignment Clarification).
b. Include appropriate salutations at the beginning and the end (this isn’t a text).
c. Be concise and direct.
d. If you are presenting a problem, include your suggested solution. (For
example, If the problem is: Missing class due to a Volleyball tournament, your
suggested solution could be: I will get notes from Ann.
Do not instruct your instructor to “let me know what I missed”).
8. You are expected to do your work. Assume your assignments will be checked for
plagiarism.
9. You are allowed to use one electronic device in class. Pick one, laptop, or phone.
10. You will not use your chosen device for purposes outside of class. Shopping for shoes,
watching soccer, and surfing Instagram during class are unprofessional, distracting,
and disrespectful.
