Essay Assignment 1: Music Appreciation

TEACHING MUSIC IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES

Guide Question: What is music to you? Cite your experiences of music

appreciation from the first time you encountered it till today as part of your core
subjects in BEED degree.

Dancing has always been a passion of mine since day one. I have been very vocal
about what dancing means to me, but in reality, I think I wouldn’t love dancing as much
as I adore it today if it weren't for music.

Ever since I was young, I have been exposed to music due to my family. My mother
would usually play songs on the speaker on Sundays while cleaning our house, and those
moments became a cherished ritual for me. It was during these times that I would dance
freely, allowing the music to inspire my movements and fill the space with joy. Moreover,
music really captured me, given the fact that no matter where I turned in my family—
whether on my mother’s side or my father’s side—they all have a great affection for music
as they love to sing and listen to it. Family gatherings often turned into mini-concerts,
where everyone would join in, singing our favorite songs. These shared moments of music
brought us closer together and created a foundation of appreciation for the art form. I
think these little moments provided me with my first music appreciation experience,
teaching me how music can unite people. Music is like magic; it has the power to make
people feel happy and energized, transforming ordinary moments into something special.

As I entered school, I discovered the broad variations of music through all the
programs I participated in. These experiences honed my appreciation for music even
deeper through dancing. I had the opportunity to perform doxologies, folk songs,
Christmas jingles, interpretative dances, hip-hop, cheer dance, and even standard dance
sports such as the slow waltz, tango, and quickstep. Each style of dance opened my eyes
to different musical genres, helping me realize that music is indeed very dynamic and
versatile. With every beat and melody, whether with or without words or lyrics, it has the
great power to convey different stories and emotions. It has always been my ally, acting
as both a comfort and a source of inspiration. During different phases of my life—be they
heartwarming or heartbreaking, joyous or sad, even during triumphs and hardships—I
have always had music with me, and it has helped shape my experiences.

Now that I am in college, encountering music as part of my core subjects in my

BEED degree has been astonishing. I am excited to have another opportunity to uncover
more fascinating and entrancing sides of music that I can pass on to my future students.
I hope to inspire them to explore their unique relationships with music, allowing them to
unfold their own experiences regarding music appreciation. I believe that by sharing my
journey, I can encourage them to find their own passion for music and its many forms,
fostering a love that can last a lifetime. Through engaging lessons, I aim to show how
music can be a powerful tool for expression and connection, enriching their lives just as
it has enriched mine.
