Assignment-1
Assignment-1
3. An aluminum rod is rigidly attached between a steel rod and a bronze rod as shown in Fig. below.
Axial loads are applied at the positions indicated. Find the maximum value of P that will not exceed a
stress in steel of 140 MPa, in aluminum of 90 MPa, or in bronze of 100 MPa.
4. Determine the largest weight W that can be supported by two wires shown in Fig. below. The
stress in either wire is not to exceed 30 ksi. The cross-sectional areas of wires AB and AC are 0.4
in2 and 0.5 in2, respectively.

5. What force is required to punch a 20-mm-diameter hole in a plate that is 25 mm thick? The shear
strength is 350 MN/m2.
6. Find the smallest diameter bolt that can be used in the clevis shown in Fig. below if P = 400 kN.
The shearing strength of the bolt is 300 MPa.
7. In Fig. below, assume that a 20-mm-diameter rivet joins the plates that are each 110 mm wide. The
allowable stresses are 120 MPa for bearing in the plate material and 60 MPa for shearing of rivet.
Determine (a) the minimum thickness of each plate; and (b) the largest average tensile stress in
the plates.
8. A steel rod having a cross-sectional area of 300 mm2 and a length of 150 m is suspended vertically
from one end. It supports a tensile load of 20 kN at the lower end. If the unit mass of steel is 7850
kg/m3 and E = 200 × 103 MN/m2, find the total elongation of the rod.
9. A bronze bar is fastened between a steel bar and an aluminum bar as shown in Fig. below. Axial
loads are applied at the positions indicated. Find the largest value of P that will not exceed an
overall deformation of 3.0 mm, or the following stresses: 140 MPa in the steel, 120 MPa in the
bronze and 80 MPa in the aluminum. Assume that the assembly is suitably braced to prevent
buckling. Use Est = 200 GPa, Eal = 70 GPa, and Ebr = 83 GPa.
10. The rigid bar AB, attached to two vertical rods as shown in Fig. below, is horizontal before the
load P is applied. Determine the vertical movement of P if its magnitude is 50 kN.

13. The assembly in Fig. below consists of a light rigid bar AB, pinned at O, that is attached to the
steel and aluminum rods. In the position shown, bar AB is horizontal and there is a gap, Δ = 5
mm, between the lower end of the steel rod and its pin support at C. Compute the stress in the
aluminum rod when the lower end of the steel rod is attached to its support.
14. A steel rod is stretched between two rigid walls and carries a tensile load of 5000 N at 20°C. If the
allowable stress is not to exceed 130 MPa at -20°C, what is the minimum diameter of the rod?
Assume α = 11.7 μm/(m·°C) and E = 200 GPa.
15. A rigid bar of negligible weight is supported as shown in Fig. below. If W = 80 kN, compute the
temperature change that will cause the stress in the steel rod to be 55 MPa. Assume the
coefficients of linear expansion are 11.7 μm/(m·°C) for steel and 18.9 μm / (m·°C) for bronze.

16. A short hollow circular cast iron cylinder is to support an axial compression load p=580 kN. The
ultimate stress in compression for the material is σu=240 Mpa. It is decided to design the cylinder
with a wall thickness t of 25 mm and a factor of safety of 3.0 with respect to the ultimate strength.
Compute the minimum required outside diameter d of the cylinder.
17. Three rods, each of area 250 mm2, jointly support a 7.5 kN load, as shown in Fig. below.
Assuming that there was no slack or stress in the rods before the load was applied, find the stress
in each rod. Use Est = 200 GPa and Ebr = 83 GPa.
