Principle of DC Motor: 1 & 2 Sems/CSE, CE, ME/Reg & Eve
According to the figure, the pole fluxes passes through the conductor from the
north pole to the south pole. When current passes through the coil or conductor, it
produces magnetic flux on the surrounding of the conductor . The direction of
this flux follows right hand rule. Magnetic flux never cut the another magnetic
flux, as a result the surrounding flux bends to the poles flux. The magnetic flux
always tries to maintain straight line condition. So bended fluxes exert a force on
the surrounded fluxes. As a result the armature feels a rotating torque and the
armature starts to rotate and the direction of rotation follows the Fleming's Left-
hand Rule.
Classification of DC Motors
1. Electromagnetic motors
2. Brushed
3. Brushless
4. Uncommutated
5. Permanent magnet stators
6. Wound stators
6.1 Series connection
6.2 Shunt connection
6.3 Compound connection
Uses:
The DC Motor or Direct Current Motor to give it its full title, is the most
commonly used actuator for producing continuous movement and whose speed of
rotation can easily be controlled, making them ideal for use in applications were
speed control, servo type control, and/or positioning is required.
