Reflect on your practice

Refer to CNO’s Practice Reflection questions to help you think about your experiences and identify areas of your
practice that need professional development.
Watch How to become a reflective practitioner for guidance on how to reflect.

Identify your learning gaps

What are the most important areas in your nursing practice that need improvement?
Consider the following:
Talking with a peer(s) or colleague(s) from any practice setting about your learning gaps.

How will addressing your learning gaps help you improve your nursing practice?

My unit specializes in patient care for surgery; thus, some patients frequently need wound
care and dressing changes. My knowledge about infection prevention among patients with
open wounds is not as comprehensive as I would like it to be. As a nurse student, I
understand the critical importance of improving in this area to enhance my quality of patient
care. I am unsure of the most effective way to avoid hospital-related infection and ensure my
patient's wound healing is optimized. I am committed to filling this knowledge gap during my
semester.

Define your learning goals
Based on your areas of practice needing further development, what are your learning goals?

When defining your learning goals, consider the following:

What specific areas of your nursing practice are you going addressing with this goal?

How do you hope to enhance or improve your nursing practice?

How will you benefit from these changes?

Who else might benefit from these changes (for example, patients, peers or other health care team
members you interact with)?

When do you hope to see results?

Watch: Are your learning goals SMART? to enhance your learning goals.

By October 28th, I will be able to select the appropriate intervention to minimize my patient's
risk for infection related to wound care. I believe that will enhance their recovery time and
quality of life. As a nursing student, supporting my patient's recovery is crucial as part of their
treatment during their hospital stay. I am fully committed to understanding and applying safe
and competent care, as it broadens my understanding of the CNO Code of Conduct Principles
and Infection Control Protocols. This understanding is a key factor in ensuring the best possible
care for my patient, and I am confident in my abilities to apply it effectively.
By November 18th, I can use effective techniques to prevent infection during dressing
changes. This skill is not only about improving the effectiveness of my intervention but also
enhancing the patient's recovery time and minimizing possible complications after the surgery.
Moreover, infection prevention possibly shortens the hospital stay as well. As a nursing
student, I understand that adequate infection control and implementing a sterile field when
changing dressing are not just important but crucial to providing quality and professional
patient care. My progress in these techniques will expand my knowledge of the CNO Code of
Conduct Principles and contribute to improving patient care, instilling a sense of optimism
about my future performance.

Link your goals

What principles of the Code of Conduct align with your goals?

Principle 1: Nurses respect the dignity of patients and treat them as individuals.

Principle 2: Nurses work together to promote patient well-being.

Principle 3: Nurses maintain patients’ trust by providing safe and competent care.

Principle 4: Nurses work respectfully with colleagues to best meet patients’ needs.

Principle 5: Nurses act with integrity to maintain patients’ trust.

Principle 6: Nurses maintain public confidence in the nursing profession.

Plan 2021
Describe your learning activities
Describe the learning activities you plan to complete to address your learning goals and include specific
timelines.

Consider the following:

How are you going to achieve your learning goals?

What resources will you need to undertake this learning?

How do you learn best? What is your learning style (e.g. visual, auditory etc.)?

What might get in the way of you completing your learning activity?

How will you overcome these obstacles?

Provide a timeline on when you intend to complete your activities

1. Read CNO's Infection Prevention Guidelines by October 7th.

2. Read three scholastic articles about infection prevention among post-operative patients
from reputable journals or databases.
3. Read and understand Humber River Hospital Guidelines about Infection control among post-
operative patients by October 28th.
4. By October 14th, I plan to seek guidance from my Supervisor to collect helpful information
about infection prevention during wound care. I deeply value the insights and experience of
my Supervisor, and I believe their guidance will be instrumental in my learning process.
5. I plan to speak with the unit nurses and observe their actions during wound care. I aim to
clarify any unclear aspects of the procedure and learn from their experience, as I deeply
respect their expertise and believe this will greatly contribute to my understanding and
application of infection control principles.

Reflect on your plan

Use this section to reflect on your Learning Plan and evaluate changes to your practice.

Consider the following:

Did you accomplish your learning goals? If so, how will you apply your new knowledge into practice?

If you didn’t accomplish your goals, what prevented you from achieving them?

If you don’t accomplish your goals this year, you can always carry them forward into your next Learning Plan.
